Anabely Lopes wanted a child more than anything, so the 44-year-old was ecstatic when she became pregnant last year — and then devastated when doctors said her unborn child had a fatal abnormality...
A new law restricting abortion access had gone into effect days earlier, and Lopes soon found herself on a plane, leaving South Florida to get an abortion at a clinic in Washington.
On Tuesday, Lopes will return to Washington, this time accompanying U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address...

Life is fatal.
Knowing the left, anything would qualify in their book to excuse an abortion.
Exactly-no mention of what the problem is. A large percentage can be repaired in utero so until the media divulges the whole truth I’m not buying into it.
Doctors have known to be wrong about these things before. Doctors tell a mother their child has some horrific disorder, but the mother carries the child full term. Upon birth, voila! The child is fine.

That’s the most illogical statement I have ever read in a headlline
No, they do mention it. The child had trisomy 18, which is where the 18th chromosome has an extra “leg”. It is pretty much universally fatal, and is not “repairable”. It’s also not something you need to go out of your way to terminate, since it is fatal and nearly always fatal during gestation, there is no reason to get an abortion. Also, as noted above, Florida apparently does not restrict abortion in the case of fatal abnormalities anyway, so the whole thing is theatrics.
And I still have to wonder why, if this pregnancy was so “wanted”, did the mother rush to have it destroyed the minute it became apparent that the baby wasn’t perfect? She was almost certainly going to lose the baby within a month or two anyway, why not enjoy the time she had with her child?
The Dems parading this woman’s choices around seems to me to highlight the Dems’ closet eugenicist streak.
Trisomy 18 is confirmed through amniocentesis, but diagnosed through gross physical abnormalities seen on the ultrasound. It’s not something the docs are likely to be guessing at.
Couldn’t find a coat hanger, or a neighbor with one?
Yeah ... “My baby was going to die, so I had to kill him.” WTF???
A leftist for a mother.
I figure this was a Downs child which is more common with older mothers.
Ending someone else’s life should not be a matter of convenience. She got what she wanted didn’t she?
I’m sorry
Doctors have been wrong numerous times
Dollars to donuts the child had ZERO birth defects and this is a nasty lying trash article justifying murder with typical leftist virtue signaling.
My condolences to you on the loss of your son. I’m sure that was an extremely difficult experience.
My son and DIL also lost their son at 9 weeks, to the very same trisomy.
One of the things I love about FR is that we all come from different walks of life, and we use that knowledge to help each other, sometimes through education, and sometimes by compassion and supporting each other.
Thank you for sharing your story.
I’ve read too many times when the docs were wrong and a healthy baby is born.
Then, when she was 15 weeks pregnant, results from genetic testing confirmed what an earlier blood test had indicated: Her child had Trisomy 18, a genetic condition that affects how a child’s body develops and grow.
5 to 10 percent die within the first year. So it's not fatal for 90-95 percent, but most people will not know this.
The law includes exceptions to save the woman’s life, prevent serious injury or if the baby has a “fatal fetal abnormality. According to the article she need two doctors are required to certify in writing that the abortion is medically needed, they both were afraid to write the necessary letters. They submitted exam results and articles about the babies condition but she says they did not write the letters confirming that she needed the abortion.
Dingbat Wasserman Schultz says they have put doctors who are simply trying to take care of their patients and make sure they can give them the best possible healthcare, they put them and their licenses and their freedom because it’s a criminal prosecution — at risk, and they have put women at risk.
It is fatal. The 5-10% who die in the first year are the 5-10% who live long enough to make it to term. Based on our research during my wife’s pregnancy with a trisomy 18 baby, I think we found that only a handful ever made it past 1 year, and none made it more than a few years after that. The complications from this condition are severe.
From the Wiki:
About 95% of pregnancies that are affected do not result in a live birth.[13] Major causes of death include apnea and heart abnormalities. It is impossible to predict an exact prognosis during pregnancy or the neonatal period.[13] Half of the live infants do not survive beyond the first week of life.[17] The median lifespan is five to 15 days.[18][19] About 8–12% of infants survive longer than 1 year.[20][21][better source needed] One percent of children live to age 10.[13] However, these estimates may be pessimistic; a retrospective Canadian study of 254 children with trisomy 18 demonstrated ten-year survival of 9.8%, and another found that 68.6% of children with surgical intervention survived infancy.[21]
So deeply sorry, Little Pig.
