The Biden administration administration's plan to send Ukraine a battalion of lethal Abrams tanks will be hampered by the production timeframe and the Pentagon's insistence that it does not have any in surplus, the Defense Department revealed Thursday.
Unlike some of the high-tech weaponry the U.S. has been shipping to Ukraine as part of a multi-billion effort to deter Russia's invasion, the U.S. military does not 'have these tanks available in excess in our U.S. stocks,' deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh' told reporters.
The means it could take months before the tanks, which President Biden called the most capable in the world, reach their destination. It is anyone's guess what the state of play in the war will be at that point. The one-year anniversary of Russia's brutal invasion is approaching.
Officials said it could take up to a year before the the Ukrainian military is using Abrams tanks on the ground to try to retake territory captured by the Russians – with fears of a new Russian offensive this spring.

They started that when Bill Clinton downsized the military and closed all those SAC bases. ***SPIT***
LOL..knew it. It was never gonna happen. I seen over 2,000 Sitting in the desert, But alas they all have the DU armor.
Don’t let the headline fool you. The depot refreshes and ships out M1A1’s on a regular basis.
Check and see if the Afghans will lend us some.
Zelenski can go to Afghanistan to pick up our Army surplus.
Perhaps he and Putin can get into a bidding war.
“Check and see if the Afghans will lend us some.”
no point ... they’re selling ‘em to the russkies ...
Don’t we ALWAYS fight the next war with the last war’s weapons?
Oh?
With DEPLETED uranium??
What ever happened to all those M-60s we used to have?
I believe it was Zelensky that just said he wasn’t interested in any peace.
Perhaps they could purchase some from Afghanistan.
With all the WW III talk—its a bluff—no weapons for a real war we would be forced to go NUKE with a first strike. 31 tanks will not stop even a small nation. Out Metrosexual Army and Navy wouldn’t match that of the Mexican Cartels at this point. We have won the PR/Propaganda War in Ukraine but what happens when Zelensky gives his nightly broadcast with Russian music from the parade in downtown Kiev? That’s the problem with Propaganda—reality gets in the way.
Congress should demand an immediate audit of all expenditures for Ukraine since January 21, 2021. And until that is completed and published in the public record, no more money for Ukraine by the American taxpayer.
US DU armor on M1A1s has been classified since 1988 or so. We do not export them, no matter their age or quantity in storage. There is only one manufacturer General Dynamics Corp. GD is currently working through the Polish order of 116 tanks M1A2Ms to be delivered by the end of the year and then begins on the next 350 for the same customer. Exportable M1A2Ms have standard armor, optics, and sensors and are not classified in any way.
We only export versions without Depleted Uranium/ceramic armor - M1A2Ms. There are no qualified companies to remove the DU armor, and it would take around 64 months to get just one up to speed on removing the DU armor alone, health and safety issues would take longer.
No US M1s were even in Afghanistan. Iraq and Saudi have exportable M1, Egypt makes M1 exportable under license.
They are experimenting with a version that uses a hybrid electric engine to make it quieter in certain situations (M1s are already pretty quiet) and to lessen the fuel logistics.
Tank retrievers are in the package - Ukraine already has tank transported and they use mostly rail anyway.

—”Damaged by what?”
Damaged by what?

Persian Gulf War
...”A total of 23 M1A1s were damaged or destroyed during the war. Of the nine Abrams tanks destroyed, seven were destroyed by friendly fire and two intentionally destroyed to prevent capture by the Iraqi Army. Some others took minor combat damage, with little effect on their operational readiness.”
Iraq War
...”During the invasion, at least nine Abrams tanks were put out of action by fire from rocket-propelled grenades”
During three months, about one-third of the Iraqi Army’s M1 tanks had been damaged or destroyed by ISIL and some were captured by opposing forces. By December 2014, the Iraqi Army only had about 40 operational Abrams left. “
Not listed are a few reports of Abrams crew injuries from mine damage in Iraq.
100% correct and something too many here don’t understand. The tanks going to foreign governments are not US configuration. We never send our top of the line stuff. I remember people going crazy over the stuff left in Afghanistan and how China and Russia was going to our technology. When the fact was that the equipment left in Afghanistan was primarily older assets a lot of which we don’t even use anymore. Many of the vehicles were broken down and abandoned. The aircraft were all older models we generally do not fly and all the sensitive avionics were stripped out of them. We should have still destroyed as much of it as possible though.
your “peace” means surrendering to Russia, which is not an option
Russia keeps attacking and warmongering, so Russia is not interested in peace, just conquest
this war will still be going a year from now
If tanks are really so scarce then the policy is indeed foolish.
Correct. Time to break out the reverse engineered alien tech we have.
OK. Time for Xi Jinpig to take Taiwan. Stupid Americans depleted enough assets without replacing them.
Big Pharma drove the Scamsemic.
Now it’s The Military -Industrial Complex’s turn.
And they suck out 10X as much $$$ as Big Pharma does.
This is such robbery!!!
