Five fired Memphis police officers were charged on Thursday with second-degree murder over the death of Tyre Nichols - who died three days after being beaten during a January 7 traffic stop.
Demetrius Haley, Tadarrius Bean, Desmond Mills, Jr., Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith, who are all black, are now in custody.
In addition to second degree murder the five were also charged with aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.
On Thursday afternoon DA Steve Mulroy briefed the press, saying his team had moved 'swiftly, but also fairly' to review the case that led to the charges against the five officers. He added that the police bodycam footage of the incident will be released sometime after 6pm Central Time on Friday.
Second-degree murder, described by the Memphis District Attorney as a 'knowing murder,' is punishable by 15 to 60 years in prison under Tennessee law.
All five former cops were detained on bonds of up to $350,000.
Court records don't list attorneys for Smith, Bean or Haley. Martin's lawyer, William Massey, confirmed that his client had turned himself in. He and Mills' lawyer, Blake Ballin, said they planned to discuss the charges at a news conference later Thursday.
Nichols, a 29-year-old FedEx driver, was pulled over on January 7 by the Memphis police for what was initially reported as reckless driving.
That interaction led to a violent confrontation that put him in the hospital, where he would die three days later (January 10) due to 'extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating,' according to preliminary results of an autopsy commissioned by attorneys for his family.
He reportedly suffered cardiac arrest and kidney failure following the allegedly brutal interaction with the officers.

Releasing the tape at 1800 tomorrow.
Buckle up…
5 on 1? Hang on this is going to be bad.
The video is coming out tomorrow night. Will visit the store to buy some more .40s, this time the high quality stuff. And some buck loads.
I don’t know if I want to see someone beaten to death. We don’t really know if he was reckless driving or not. He was almost home.
By the way Memphis will hire convicted felons as cops because they don’t want people from other counties policing here. The city council thinks it will be some country white guy bullying blacks even though the surrounding counties have plenty of blacks without criminal histories.
Couple of words of hope for Memphis.
January really is not riot season and this appears to be black on black assault.
But, don’t get too complacent.................................
Scuttlebutt is “not good”…
Well, weren’t most of the cops in the Freddie Gray incident in Baltimore of the African American persuasion? Didn’t stop days of rioting and carnage
I want to know why they supposedly did this while wearing body cams. I guess we will see if there is more to the story eventually.

They just use ‘black (cop) on black perp assault’ as an example of what they call “Systemic Racism”, where in other words the system is so inherently racist in its very DNA that even when it’s black cops they are ‘disproportionately targeting POC’.
I know almost no one who doesn’t think most police departments need better training and better personnel, liberal or conservative. I bet as many Bernie as Trump partisans think that cops being on camera is a Good Thing.
I know no way of rationally debating anyone, on any subject, who freely admits they could never be convinced of any position other than their own despite evidence.
As for my town Memphis, alternating loads of bird shot and buckshot are on the ready.

I live in Florida. Looking forward to a “nice” day. Sunny, high 62.
Memphis is a city that is 83% black. The city government and city services are virtually all black. They can’t really bark racism is a city government problem.
I recall a study from years ago that claimed that use of force incidents went up with the % of women on the force. The departments with the lowest use of force incidents were those with higher % of black males on the job. Don’t know if that’s true but that’s what my hazy memory brings up. It was supposedly all about compliance, people didn’t comply with women officers but did for black male officers at a much higher rate.

You know that. And *I* know that. But that didn’t stop ‘em in Ferguson, did it?
Thugs that managed to get badges; one of the worst nightmares of any Citizen regardless of political beliefs.
I have seen a LEO look right into a surveillance camera before re-aiming it so it could not see what other illegal things he did.
They wear the magic blue uniform, everything they do is right.
Plenty of Youtube videos of drunk driving cops getting caught. The cop pulling them over is all upset and worried every single time. A lot of ‘it’s not like it used to be, we have cameras now and can’t give you a break’.
Just look at people that ruin their lives on Tiktok now as well. They just don’t care.
One has no way of knowing what happened here, but one is open to the explanation that these cops were bad cops and had some ulterior reason for killing this guy.
As unfortunate as that would be.
And don’t think for one moment that because the ex-cops were black that this will end well.
Four decades ago I remember an “activist” telling me that “it don’t matter if the cop is black...when they send him to the academy he doesn’t think like a black man, he thinks like a BLUE man!”.
(Thank God that he does!)
The Remington has officially left the gun safe as of 10 minutes ago and she’s hungry for buckshot.
