US elder statesman Henry Kissinger said that Russia’s invasion shows there is no longer a point to keeping Ukraine out of Nato, the long-held aspiration of Kyiv that he had opposed.
The 99-year-old former secretary of state and apostle of realpolitik has for months advocated a ceasefire in the Ukraine war that would in effect accept some military gains by Russia.
But speaking virtually to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Kissinger said that Nato membership for Ukraine would be an “appropriate outcome”.
“Before this war, I was opposed to membership of Ukraine in Nato because I feared that it would start exactly the process that we have seen now,” Kissinger said.
“Now that this process has reached this level, the idea of a neutral Ukraine under these conditions is no longer meaningful,” said Kissinger, speaking before a bookcase with a framed picture of president Richard Nixon, under whom he served.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had described Ukraine’s Nato’s aspirations as a threat as he justified the invasion launched on February 24 last year.

Never trust Kissinger!
Never trust Kissinger!
How old is Henry Kissinger?
The last time he saw 99 was in 1799.
Kissinger is the same guy who created the china threat.
He's probably right. Elon Musk said the same thing. Zelensky wants to fight to the last Ukrainian. Should we let him?
Adding Ukraine to NATO would be like adding Cuba to the Warsaw Pact back in the 1950s. Only bad things could happen after that.
Are we still listening to Kissinger fifty years later?
The Dominican nuns at my parochial school in the ‘sixties loved “Dr. Kissinger.”
One of the first Globalist foriegner embeds in the “Deep State” takeover of the US government
No, but Rupert Murdoch does, unfortunately.
Hardly, Ukraine is just like the rest of NATO, it is European and borders a number of NATO nations and obviously lives in fear of Russia like all the other NATO nations.
He didn’t ‘soften’ - he went 180 degrees opposite.
Agreed. Ukraine does live in fear of Russia. Just as Castro’s Cuba lived in fear of the United States. But what would the US have done had Cuba been admitted to the Warsaw Pact? We already know that answer from the Cuban missile crisis.
Don’t get me wrong. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is war crime, and Putin is a war criminal. But too often we in the West act without any regard to how other nations feel about things. And that can get you into heaps of trouble.
What happens in Davos should stay in Davos.
Well at least one of you Putin puffers has come around.
I don't know but I heard he was a waiter at the last supper.
Most reasonable analysis I’ve seen so far of where this war currently stands.

“Negotiations need to begin in the next two months before it creates upheavals and tensions that will not be easily overcome. Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante. Pursuing the war beyond that point would not be about the freedom of Ukraine, but a new war against Russia itself,” Kissinger said.
This new stance by Kissinger is not a message to Putin, but to Putin's successor.
