Cannabis-related emergency room visits on the rise among older adults in California: study

The number of seniors visiting emergency rooms in California for cannabis-related issues is growing, according to new research.

From 2005 to 2019, the state’s emergency departments saw a 1,808 percent relative increase in the rate of cannabis-related trips among those aged 65 and older.

Cannabis is currently legal for both medicinal and recreational use in California. The state became the first in the country to legalize medical marijuana in 1996, while the substance was not approved for recreational use there until November 2016.

The study found that cannabis-related emergency department visits in California rose sharply among seniors from 2013 to 2017, but leveled off after 2017 following implementation of the state’s legalization program. Based on those findings, researchers noted legalization of recreational marijuana does not appear to correlate with higher emergency department visits among elderly adults.

But the results do underscore the health risks cannabis can pose to seniors.

Just like corn and soybeans, the agriculture boys and girls continue to develop better products.

I did a gummy once and that was enough

Some of the younger guys I am in a sports-league with talk about "edibles."

Seems like a very depressing and lonely way to consume marijuana

Isn't the "fun" of marijuana come from listening to the Allman Brothers, having some beers, and sharing a communal joint, particularly if one's cohorts from the girls dorm of your college are in attendance?

I had a…friend…who ate jerky that had been enhanced. He had no idea that each piece contained about 100 milligrams of THC and he ate 2 pieces. So did his wife.

Within a couple of hours neither could walk. Both were projectile vomiting- he into the kitchen sink, she into the downstairs toilet. He crawled to the sofa but it felt like it was moving and he felt he would fall off. He belly crawled up the stairs and made it to the king sized bed which was big enough that he felt he could stay on it.

They could not call for help as they found themselves unable to operate their phones.

She crawled to the dog’s bed and spent the night there.

This was Memorial Day Weekend which was a good thing…the next three days were a haze of nausea and weakness. They had a hard time keeping food down for a week and lost over 10 pounds each. So much for munchies.

“..And why did you come to Urgent Care tonight, Sir?”

I dunno, I guess I can’t stop eating.

“...You ‘guess’ that you can’t stop eating?”
do you mean; even when you’re not hungry?

Well, I’m hungry all the time.

In 2005, 366 people over the age of 65 sought care at an emergency department in the state for a cannabis-related issue, while that number grew to 12,167 in 2019.

I wonder what the definition of "cannabis-related issue" is.

Probably, [any medical issue] + [tested positive for THC].

I went back to it when it became legal and vape pens were around. So much cleaner, no rolling joints, stinky smoke. Just nice taste and cheap.

Sounds like the weed they took was spiked with something else to cause all those symptoms. Usually an overdose of weed manifests as a panic attack or strong feelings of paranoia.

The amount of THC in the edibles is completely unregulated making them dangerous and needs regulation. The pro-marijuana potheads will scream bloody murder of course, claiming that marijuana is completely safe.

‘This ain’t Woodstock weed!’ The number of seniors ending up in hospital from using cannabis has jumped 1,800% in California since 2005, many startled by the drug’s potency nowadays

People aged 65 and over increasingly turn to pot to fight pain from arthritis and other woes, but the super-potent strains found today can cause everything from dizziness to falls and heart palpitations.

The pot today is just NOT the same. A lot is laced with hard drugs a lot is just strains of incredibly strong thc. I’d have a cup of tea or nice bath instead. Or a bottle of red wine if I needed to really escape for the night.

Maybe not 100% safe, but unlike alcohol nobody dies from an overdose from it.

According to WebMD, these are the symptoms of marijuana overdose:

High levels of anxiety
Panic attack
Rapid heart rate
Difficulty conversing
Poor coordination
High or low blood pressure
Nausea and vomiting
Extreme confusion and memory problems
Paranoia
Hallucinations

Yes…absolutely…thinking you are going to die…inability to hold a cell phone and dial it…inability to remember that your son is in your contacts…inability to remember how to spell your son’s name…throwing up on your cell phone…swearing there was something moving in the vomit as you are cleaning it up…

Yeah but a panic attack can easily result in those very symptoms. I’m talking about the vomiting and not being able to eat for 3 days that you mentioned, never heard of something like that with weed.

CBD doesn’t contain any THC, therefore no high.
