These Exit Polls Show How Toxic Trump Is Now
National Review ^ | November 16, 2022 | Dan McLaughlin

Donald Trump announced his 2024 presidential campaign Tuesday night, heavy with the odor of a man fighting the last war. But politics is all about matching the man to the moment. Trump’s moment was six years ago. The nation’s voters have moved on, and if early signs are any indication, Republican primary voters are ready to consider doing so as well.

The 2022 midterms were about as decisive a failure for Trump as it was possible for them to be. Consider, as one item of evidence, the exit polls. Exit polls are not perfect; even though they should have the advantage over other polls of polling only people who actually voted, they still have their known biases and shortcomings. Still, they are the only evidence we get of who voted for whom and why at the time of the actual election, and when they deliver messages in bold, screaming letters, we should listen.

The 2022 exit polls examined the national House electorate and 19 Senate and/or governors races across eleven states — Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. Two of the clearest findings across all of these races are that (1) Donald Trump is profoundly unpopular with the people who voted in 2022 and (2) Trump was a fatal drag on many Republican candidates.

On the first point, look at Trump’s favorability ratings. He is viewed unfavorably by a solid majority of the midterm voters nationally (by a 19-point margin of 58 percent to 39 percent), and in every state polled, even places such as Texas (52 percent disapproval to 45 percent approval), Ohio (53 percent to 44 percent), and North Carolina (53 percent to 43 percent) that he won two years ago.

Toxic to whom...to what? The Establishment/Swamp (GOP and Dems) or, perhaps, to the Woke?

“NR said the same crap six years ago too. Now they say that was “his moment””

So true…

Great point.

How does that square with the fact that Trump’s endorsement leading up to the election was like gold, and Trumps candidates did well overall.

Totally different things. This are people who actually showed up to vote and how they felt. The evidence Trump was a drag on candidates is there. Senatorial and gubernatorial candidates who underperformed other Republicans statewide. Trump endorsements seemed to matter in the primary season but it was toxic to winning in the general in key races. Look at the lack of enthusiasm here on FR for his announcement. I know two years is a lifetime in politics but Trump didn’t do the things needed to rehabilitate his image with the broader electorate needed to win offices. Through a mix of his own behavior and the inescapable attacks from the Left he’s poisoned as a candidate. Kari lake might’ve won in AZ, Hershel in GA, etc.

He’s had some great ideas and laid out the blueprint on what our priorities should be but he’s no longer the one to make it happen. It doesn’t help that he sat on his PAC money or continues to take pot shots are perceived rivals like DeSantis, Youngkin and others. For all his talk last night about bringing people together, it rang hollow. It’s also telling that Ivanka wasn’t there last night. Her statement about focusing on family with Jared, not politics, is a thin disguise. She wasn’t there. I hope no one is afraid to jump into 2024 because Trump announced.

I think Trump will lose in the battleground states. Look at what happened in Arizona: The Trump slate of candidates lost. Only Kari Lake was about to make it close.

You can scream FRAUD all you want, but the rules will be the same (or worse, with both a Democrat Gov and Sec of State now). Two of the people I convinced to vote for Trump in 2020 have already told me no way, no how will they EVER vote for Trump again - and they voted FOR Kari Lake!

If you don’t win the battleground states, you LOSE.

Trump’s candidates underperformed or lost in every battleground state. Show me someone tied to Trump in a battleground state who outperformed Republicans who were NOT tied to him.

The RINOs are the very essence of “toxic”.
The National Review has long ago lost any meaningful influence in conservative politics.
Nobody has “…moved on…”.
Saving America and our cherished liberties from the communist future the RINOs have planned for us is the most important movement in contemporary politics, and Donald Trump is the only person who can save us and the country.
The RINOs and publications like the NR are Chinese communist collaborators, and are every bit as guilty of treason as Benedict Arnold

The same RAG that published the anti-Trump screed years ago trying to keep Trump from getting nominated. About 19 so-called ‘conservatives’ on why they think he was not good for the party. Their ‘poll’ is meaningless.

There is only one candidate that has declared for ‘24 - Trump. So if you continue to trash him now then I will assume you are a Democrat troll.

Do you think Trump will get 80 million votes?

Show me a battleground state where the Republican candidates tied to Trump outperformed those who were not.

And yes, I think DeSantis WOULD get a lot more votes than Trump. Trump can only block DeSantis, but Trump can’t win the battleground states.

PS: I passionately supported and donated to the Trump slate of candidates in Arizona. Now we have almost solid Democrat control of the state.
