Ukraine’s counter-offensive recaptures first village in Luhansk

Ukraine has recaptured its first village in Luhansk, a region that Russian forces took five months to bomb into submission and conquer.

Belogorovka is the latest prize for Ukraine’s continuing counter-offensive pushing Russia away from the second city of Kharkiv.

The village lies only a dozen or so miles from the towns of Lysychansk and Severdonestsk, key regional economic centres in the wider Donbas region that the Kremlin has promised to defend at all costs.

The village also lies 45 miles east of the Oskil River, where Russian forces fled after a Ukrainian offensive around Kharkiv recaptured an area the size of Devon in a few days.

Serhiy Gaidai, the Ukrainian head of Luhansk, said that Ukrainian soldiers were now in “full control” of Belogorovka.

“We all should be patient in anticipation of a large-scale de-occupation of the Luhansk region,” he said.

There are reports that the “occupation authorities” in Luhansk are calling for an immediate referendum on joining Russia. That, in theory, could permit Putin to use Russian regular troops in Luhansk to escalate the situation. However, I also read yesterday that Putin doesn’t want to increase the ranks of the regular Russian army because he fears a large army of Russians could turn against him and his regime.

You mean Ukraine has been fighting internal violent separatist groups, funded and armed by Russia, attacking the country from within

you forgot to mention that important detail

Apparently Putin has given up on what's left of his regular troops and the high command, and is now by-passing the Defense Ministry to recruit and deploy his own "irregular" units.

RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE CAMPAIGN ASSESSMENT, SEPTEMBER 18

Not a good situation for him if he and his armed forces have lost confidence in each others. That tends to go badly for failed Russian leaders.

What does clearing up a lie about the Eastern Ukraine have to do with “American policy”?

After losing close to 100,000 military personnel and hundreds of billions in military equipment, and unable to keep territory Russians had conquered, the world is watching what’s going to happen next.

Look for Putin to lose his leadership positions(s), if not his life.

Also, and most important and damaging, are the other expected losses, including losing Crimea and other territories/republics and allies, including Belarus and others.

And that won’t be the end of it, because, the Chinese could be emboldened to take adjacent Russian land...

Putin bit off more than he could chew, but he could also lose a lot of what he already had in his stomach.
