Return of Crimea to Ukraine a requirement of international law: Turkish president

Ankara supports Ukraine's territorial integrity and rejects the illegal annexation of Crimea, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.

"The return of Crimea to Ukraine, of which it is an inseparable part, is essentially a requirement of international law," Erdogan said in a video message to the Second Crimea Platform Summit.

The Crimea Platform is an international coordination mechanism of Ukraine to draw more global attention to Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Erdogan said Ankara will continue to support the Crimean Platform that was established to resolve the Crimean issue through peaceful means.

"Türkiye does not recognize the annexation of Crimea and has been openly stating since the first day that this step is illegitimate and illegal. This is a principled stance that has not only legal but also moral foundations," he said.

Well, I didn’t expect to read that. Erdogan has not been
one of my favorites, but he’s not snuggling up close to
Russia here.

His recent demands of Sweden and Finland regarding their
dealings with Israel still stand, so I am not going to
become a fan of this guy.

He’s a loose cannon > IMO.

If nothing else, you can’t blame Erdogan for being committed to trying to game both sides of the proverbial geopolitical fence.

(Pay no mind to his glaring hypocrisy on the matter of Turkey’s claim over northern Cyprus.)

Yeah, that's going to happen.

Right after America gives the SW "back" to Mexico, and gives Hawaii back to the Hawaiians. Right after that.

Never going back - nor the new Russian eastern third.

Soon ukraine will no longer have a sea port.

NATO will launch a false flag any time to blame Russia

The Turks are still miffed about Catherine the Great beating the Turks and then buying Crimea, back before the USA ratified its Constitution.

If Russia buying Crimea from the Turks [in gold] 240 years ago doesn’t seal the deal, I guess America needs to give back the Louisiana Purchase, the Southwest, California, Alaska and Hawaii.

Do you know who used to own Crimea before Catherine the Great purchased it in 1783?

Do you know when America paid for “The Louisiana Purchase,” The Southwest, Alaska or Hawaii?

If the Crimea deal is off, does that mean we have to give back the above states?

Erdogan plays to win for Turkiye which is how he wants the country’s name spelled.

Trump could understand and deal with a man like that no matter how distasteful Erdogan may be.

Turkey is not demanding Crimea for itself but that Russia honor the transfer that they made to Ukraine in 1954 and recognized with Ukrainian independence in 1991. The proper analogy would be if Russia can claim back Crimea which it gave to Ukraine then it could claim back Alaska.

Travis, the U.S.S.R. came to an end.

These territories broke off. They were recognized by the
international community for upwards of 30 years. Russia
did not seek any remedy for that. It did not declare an
objection.

Further, wasn’t it a Conservative objective that all
people’s of the Soviet Union that wanted to, should
declare their independence and achieve it. I remember
heralding the freeing up of peoples at the end of the
U. S. S. R. It was supposed to be a good thing,
wasn’t it?

Has the United States ceased to exist, and Alaska and
Hawaii declared a declaration of independence that has
been recognized by the international community for thirty
years?

Yes, former Soviet bloc nations clamor to be added to NATO because of the gorilla in the room - Russia, the aggressor.

NATO is a defense pact. It is not an alliance that seeks to
advance the ability to attack nations.

Estonia and Latvia are members of NATO and have been since
2004. Neither of them have taken one threatening step
toward Moscow since then. They do not have nuclear missiles
on their soil.

Since invading the Ukraine earlier this year, Russian
officials have made threatening or foundational comments
of the type they made about the Ukraine before invading,
about Moldavia, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and
Sweden.

Russia still can’t figure out why these entities are fearful
of Russian adventurism, and some have requested membership
in NATO.

Russia even signed a treaty to recognizing Ukrainian independence on December 8, 1991, called the Belovezh Accords.
