Just seven years after making its debut in Milan, Domino’s Pizza is saying arrivederci to Italy.
The fast food giant closed the last of its 29 stores on the Italian Peninsula after struggling to gain a foothold in the country, Bloomberg reports, with locals proving to be difficult to win over for the American chain.
The company’s exit from Italy was met with cheers on Twitter, where users mocked Domino’s for even attempting to establish a foothold in the homeland of pizza in the first place.
Domino’s arrived in Italy in 2015, when it already had more than 12,000 stores worldwide. It planned to win customers over with “purely Italian” ingredients including “100 percent tomato sauce and mozzarella, and products like Prosciutto di Parma, Gorgonzola, Grana Padano and Mozzarella di bufala Campana,” CNBC reported at the time.

Good riddance. Dominoes is even worse than Little Caesar’s now.
I’ve never been to a Domino’s
What’s wrong with their pizza?
dang, next thing you know, Panda Express will bailing out of mainland China ...
At least Little Caesars is cheap.
We were going to order Dominos delivered the other day and it was going to be $37, decided to drive to little Caesars and spent $15.
Sure I had to spend some gas and go get it. But delivered pizza at 37 is way too expensive.
Yet Taco Bell thrives in Mexico?
This is about as smart a move as putting a Taco Bell in Tijuana.
Mostly, Italians just use tomatoes and a sprinkling of cheese on a thin crust.
Why would your typical Italian opt for Domino’s?! I haven’t had a Domino’s pizza in oh, twenty years....
Well Domino’s pizza makes a pretty good PIE.. Had a pizza just about 12 days ago..
Americans are not used to that. Not "rich" enough. Like you said, served as an appetizer.
It isn’t due to failing to win over local customers it’s to world wide inflation and Biden his best to make sure we stay in the game.
I haven’t had a pizza in a restaurant in over 30 years . I make my own !
Back in college several nights a week it was either Domino’s or PTA (Pizza Transit Authority). They both offered fast delivery and serve their purpose for college kids but neither was anything memorable tastewise. Pizza Hut didn’t even deliver back then and Papa John’s hadn’t opened. Man I feel old now lol.
MOD Pizza is close to that style-less sauce and you pick your own toppings.
When I was in Italy in the 80’s, the only chain restaurants I recall were on the military bases. My best dining experiences were in private residences where Papa went out and rounded up the diners and Mama prepared whatever was on the very short menu.
LMAO ROFL...
You are right. I remember ordering pizza near Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was low quality with very little toppings.
McDonald’s and Dominos were a novelty and lasted for a while especially in the big towns. But the Italians started to develop an attitude towards these particular companies. In some towns they refuse to use the product. I think one town Lecce in the south had a major dispute and within six months the company packed up and left. You have to be really good in the Food area to gain their respect. Doesn’t come easy.
They’ve got one in New Haven CT “competing” with Sally’s, Pepe’s and Modern so why not Italy.
Sicilian pizza is the best. It's the peas.
