LONDON (Reuters) - The early bird is getting even earlier.
With climate change spurring earlier springs across much of North America, many birds are laying their eggs earlier in the year, according to a new study – adding to mounting evidence that global warming is turning wildlife habits upside down.
Of 72 bird species examined around Chicago, roughly a third lay their eggs about 25 days earlier than they did a century ago, researchers report in the paper published on Friday in the Journal of Animal Ecology.
Those affected include the mourning dove, American kestrel and Cooper's hawk.
The scientists so far haven't found any clear traits shared by these species, such as size or migratory status, that might explain why they’re changing their schedules.
But "the majority of the birds we looked at eat insects, and insects' seasonal behavior is also affected by climate," said lead author John Bates, curator of the bird division at the Field Museum in Chicago.
How animal and plant life cycles are affected by climate change and seasonal disruptions is a question that's "becoming more front and center in people's minds," Bates said.

This doesn’t sound right to me.
It always happens when day light savings time kicks in. Everybody knows that right?
They’d rather they didn’t adapt?
IT’S DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME I TELL YA’LL!...............
Climate change is amazing
It somehow controls EVERYTHING
The modern western society version of frightening the tribe with a chicken entrail reading.
Climate change happens. We came out of an Ice Age in 1850 or so. Things have been warming. It’s nice that scientists can spot some natural phenomenon that may be relayed to this. But there is no excuse to push for higher taxes, de-industrialization, and a communist New World Order all because of weather.
And, anyway, most recent evidence indicates a cooling trend, so Spring is likely to be pushed back before you know it. Just carry on.
I think daylight savings time is the cause. Need a grant to prove it though.
“becoming more front and center in people’s minds,”
Hear that, sheep? Global climate change is front & center in your mind.

You mean ... this year, where warmer weather came earlier ... the birds laid eggs earlier? I’d think something was wrong if they didn’t.
Birds don’t live by clocks, but day length does affect their breeding.
OMG!!!! Birds are adapting - something the greenie alarmists think humans are incapable of doing, in spite of the blatant facts that humans are absolutely more capable of adapting to and mitigating effects of “climate change” than humans have ever been in all our history.
Adapting and mitigating would be a powerfully better and economically more prudent and efficient way to use human resources than chasing CO2.
On a related note, I can’t find my care car keys. I know that’s due to Climate Change, but I’m not quite sure how. I think I’ll apply for a federal grant to study the situation.
Their young will be more mature and thus more survivable by the onset of next winter. That’s a good thing, if you’re a bird!
“They’d rather they didn’t adapt?”
I have been in nature a lot in my life and one of the things that I’ve noticed is some animals if faced with fear, will react in different ways. If you catch a salmon during spawn, they will sometimes dump eggs or milt in an effort to carry their species further.
If a bird living in Chicago, with all the bullets flying around, didn’t attempt to move the species, I’d be surprised.

The birds forgot to set their clocks forward.
