Treasury Department officials on Monday said that the Internal Revenue Service will face "enormous challenges" during this year's tax filing season, warning of delays to refunds and other taxpayer services.
In a phone call with reporters, Treasury officials predicted a "frustrating season" for taxpayers and tax preparers as a result of delays caused by the pandemic, years of budget cuts to the IRS, and the federal stimulus measures that have added to the tax agency's workload.
Mark Everson, who served as the IRS commissioner during the George W. Bush administration, said "practitioners across the country are very concerned" about the agency's ability to handle the upcoming tax season.
"The service has done a good job getting relief payments and child tax credits out the door, but it has a day job of processing tax returns. The filing season is always job one," Everson said. "They went down early and hard from the pandemic and they've never really fully recovered. For both taxpayers and regular practitioners, the inability to get through on the phones is very frustrating."

They have no employees. FJB.
Didn’t the IRS just hire a million new people to go after people ,LOL
The IRS wants you to know that you can rest assured that there will be NO delays in collecting your withholding $$$ though.
Not sure it was 1 million, but I believe they did have a big
hire. It was for reviewing all the financial institutions
who saw over $600 transactions on account.
These people lie when the truth would serve them better.
This is 13 year old and under level lying skills.
Why is that necessary to mention in a news article?
How about: Mark Everson, current IRS commissioner under the Biden regime, has no f'n idea how to pay back the upcoming tax refunds following all the money giveaways this past year.
What’s a refund?
Oh, yeah, that’s basically an interest-free loan to the government.
“Didn’t the IRS just hire a million new people to go after people ,LOL”
Actually, Manchin stopped that, for now.
Right
Call me crazy, but I’m pretty sure the only reason tax refunds are going to be delayed is because darn few democrats are actually working.
Nobody works anymore. What did they expect? Free money being printed and handed out to everyone for just breathing.
This will not end well.
Well, just remove internet access from the IRS staff. No porn = more time to work.
Don’t you dare use that excuse, however!
FJB and the horse he rode in on.
That’s bureaucrat B.S. They are just f%^$ed up to start with.
I have a brother who was told last year that due to an error on his tax return, the refund he anticipated would be MORE THAN his tax preparer calculated. He only needed to call them (with an 800 number they gave him) and agree. He called soon thereafter and they told him “O.K.” and a confirming letter would be on its way. The letter arrived soon and said he only needed to sign the form, return it in the return envelope and the refund would be on its way. He sent the return form back the same day. He has YET to see the refund for last year.
I was similarly told my refund was more than I calculated but was told I didn’t need to do anything and a “check” for the correct refund amount was on its way, to arrive within 4 to six weeks. That was MONTHS AGO and again, like my brother I have never seen last years 2020 refund yet.
In both cases we have called every possible number with IRS to inquire about what has happened with our refunds and not ever reached a person or office that could tell us why they have not in fact been issued to us yet.
We live in different states.
The basic rule for minimum withholding and/or estimated payments is the following:
1. Be within $1000 of your final tax bill
2. Be within 90% of your final tax bill, if your tax bill is over $10k. The idea being that if you have a high tax bill, you should be able to estimate within 90% of what it will be, but you may not be able to get it within $1000.
In any case, the idea is to ALWAYS underpay/underwithhold, but stay above the minimums (above), so you don’t get hit with a penalty. If you do that, then you don’t have to worry about getting a refund at all. If you do accidentally break the minimums, it’s not the end of the world, as you likely didn’t break it by much and the penalties aren’t too bad for getting reasonably close.
“He has YET to see the refund for last year.”
Get ready, this will be the new normal.
Tax refunds delayed indefinitely...
“Treasury warns of ‘enormous challenges’ this tax filing season that could delay refunds”
not a problem for me: i always make sure i owe the IRS money ...
What’s a refund?
Oh, yeah, that’s basically an interest-free loan to the government.

I found it nearly impossible to explain that to some people in the office who bragged about the “big refund” they were getting from the IRS.
