The head of OneAmerica insurance said the death rate is up a stunning 40% from pre-pandemic levels among working-age people.
“We are seeing, right now, the highest death rates we have seen in the history of this business – not just at OneAmerica,” the company’s CEO Scott Davison said during an online news conference this week. “The data is consistent across every player in that business.”
OneAmerica is a $100 billion insurance company that has had its headquarters in Indianapolis since 1877. The company has approximately 2,400 employees and sells life insurance, including group life insurance to employers in the state.
Davison said the increase in deaths represents “huge, huge numbers,” and that’s it’s not elderly people who are dying, but “primarily working-age people 18 to 64” who are the employees of companies that have group life insurance plans through OneAmerica.
“And what we saw just in third quarter, we’re seeing it continue into fourth quarter, is that death rates are up 40% over what they were pre-pandemic,” he said.
“Just to give you an idea of how bad that is, a three-sigma or a one-in-200-year catastrophe would be 10% increase over pre-pandemic,” he said. “So 40% is just unheard of.”

Yeah, I had a leaks-when-it-rains/No-wind roof. It’s metal shingle with 16 years left on the warranty. I took that to heart, I mean -metal-. I removed all the leaves built up behind the skylights, in all the roof crevaces, gutters, etc. and problem solved. Seems the flashing doesn’t go up the grade high enough so the water backs up on the leaves and seeps around the flashing. After I was done I rented a bucket loader and sprayed an exterior water sealing compound around all the ares that leaked. Worked.
You are trying to make an argument off a data point with no reference numbers. My numbers were hypothetical.
In your hypothetical, you are talking about 400 more people out of 10,000,000 insured. Doesn’t sound as significant any more does it?
My point is that without any more information you guys are simply reacting to a number floating in the either without any other reference points. That’s all.
To process an insurance claim the company requires a death certificate. On every death certificate will list the alleged cause of death. The insurance company should have that data at their fingertips in a database file.
Obesity weakens the system and thereby promotes a weakened condition and death
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You're SO shallow and hollow!
“I personally no longer trust the medical professionals? and their hospitals”
I hate to have to say this but I do agree with you. The medical profession has taken a big hit.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA
Your "14" is a hypothetical number. Got it!
I’ve seen several articles in the British press about excess deaths because of this very thing. People not going to the doctor (and finding out they have hypertension or Type II diabetes that needs treatment, for example), people unable to get mammograms and colonoscopies and other diagnostic tests, non-emergency surgeries postponed, people unable to get doctor appointments, people afraid to go to the doctor or hospital because of Covid, overstretched medical and ambulance services.
While our medical system is thankfully not yet like the UK’s NHS, this sort of thing has been going on here, too, although probably to a lesser extent.
My father’s metal roof was textured panels of metal, with felt under it. It looked like composition shingles. No visible damage but 80 MPH winds and 8-1/2” of rain in 8 hours, lifted the felt and caused the leak. ZERO coverage. Nada.
It blew water past the porch and 6-8 feet inside the house. Since then, it leaks every time it rains, no matter how slow or how little wind.
Never Ever Again will I have anything to do with Texas Farm Bureau.
And there is more to the horror story that I will not go into.
I was nursing my father with a staff of 4 others while this was going on. He died of heart failure at 94 in March 2021.
The claim was denied on 9-16-2020.
This peril does not cover:
“b. Loss caused by rain, snow, sand or dust whether or not driven by wind unless the direct force of wind or hail makes an opening in the roof or wall, and the rain, snow, sand or dust enters through this opening and causes the damage.”
“For this reason, I must respectfully deny your claim for damages.”
NO MORE TEXAS FARM BUREAU!
Zero Coverage!
I work in the health insurance buisiness and see how people die.
Two things with younger people.
Drug overdoses and suicides. It’s rampant.
Yes Obesity does contribute to Covid fatality. It also probably contributes to death by normal flu and pneumonia.
“40% of their insurance policy holders are dead, not 40% of Americans. “
Not even that.
If in 2019 they held 50,000 policies and 500 died, that number is now up 40% to 700 dying in 2021.
Still small compared to all policy holders, but excuse to raise rates for sure.
All numbers are designed to mislead.
“40% of their insurance policy holders are dead, not 40% of Americans.”
40% of their policy holders are not dead..They had a 40% increase in deaths among that age group.
I agree, but is it by itself enough to cause a 40% increase in death?
““For this reason, I must respectfully deny your claim for damages.”
NO MORE TEXAS FARM BUREAU!
Zero Coverage!”
These outfits exist SOLELY TO DENY CLAIMS
They might have 10 deaths out of 100,000 insured. The next year they have 14 deaths.
Right. In a good year 99,990/100,000 survive and in a bad year 99,986/100,000 survive.
The mortality among the employed, age 18-60 demographic is very low.
That there was going to be an increase in deaths due to drug overdoses and suicides among this group was apparent early on in the pandemic in 2020.
If CEO Davison is shocked by the news now, he should have hired better actuaries.
“And keep in mind that every major insurer is reporting the same trend.”
That is 100% not true. Much of the increased deaths is regional. Meth head states like W.Va and ohio have increased deaths
I work in health insurance and sell employee benefits including group life/disabaility etc.
Life insurers sold a record amount of policies last year and have record amount of reserves.
Life insurance co’s are financially stronger than ever.
The majority of people who died from covid were old old and most have zero life insurance or smaller face amounts so insurance co’s were not as impacted as thought.
The top management of these insurance companies have totally bought into the COVID hysteria. Now they’re being faced with claims figures that are undermining that narrative. And the offices of these companies are now the scenes of heated battles between nitwits who watch CNN regularly and actuaries who know how to analyze data.
I also suspect that insurance actuaries are among the most highly skeptical people in America about getting COVID “vaccines,” too.
I agree, but is it by itself enough to cause a 40% increase in death?
I live in a meth head state so it is high.It is regional
My brother and sister live in very wealthy areas of the country and few drug overdose deaths and low drug use.
Where I live everyone is drugged out. No jobs or at least higher paying jobs.
