Oswald was a communist and a Soviet sympathizer. I have no doubt he shot Kennedy. I also have no doubt he did it for the Soviets. The only question is whether he did it with the actual encouragement of the Soviets or because he thought it would impress them.
Why else keep all this secret for so long.

The Mafia doesn't have archives or keep accurate records, so there's a lot of folklore in the organization. Being able to assassinate a president would be a plus for any Mafia don, not a minus, so there was likely a lot of boasting about doing things that the mob didn't actually do.

So 58 years later. The CIA releases documents, that an anonymous tipster, said Oswald did it and was working for the USSR. And they had to hide that since 1963.
