NEW YORK (AP) — New York City lawmakers are poised to decide Wednesday whether to prohibit most new buildings from using natural gas, a move that would make the nation’s most populous city a showcase for a climate-change-fighting policy that has been both embraced and blocked around the country.
The measure is expected to pass the City Council and subsequently receive Mayor Bill de Blasio’s signature. If all that happens, most construction projects submitted for approval after 2027 would have to use something other than gas or oil — such as electricity — for heating, hot water and cooking. Some smaller buildings would have to comply as early as 2024, while hospitals, commercial kitchens and some other facilities would be exempt.
Supporters see the proposal as a big and necessary move in a city where heating, cooling and powering buildings accounts for nearly 70% of emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases.
Proponents also say they’re fighting air pollution, particularly on behalf of communities of color.
“We must take steps towards climate justice — which is inextricably tied to racial justice,” and the gas legislation “provides an actionable and meaningful answer,” Council sponsor Alicka Ampry-Samuel tweeted in September.

They will not stop there. Their goal is to eliminate all fossil fuels so we will freeze in the dark.
Where do they think electricity is going to come from? The sun doesn’t shine much and the wind doesn’t blow much in NYS.
Switching from #2 and even #4 Fuel Oil to Natural Gas PROFOUNDLY improved the air quality in NYC. According to SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN it actually saved lives when people with breathing difficulties did not die.
Those people are just a rounding error for the number of people the Democrats are going to kill in their war on Energy.
They want us freezing in the dark.
The climate will change regardless of any efforts to control it.
A little more warm is actually beneficial, humans are a tropical species.
We will all freeze to death when the next ice age happens.
Wouldn’t they just have electric heat and stove? I can’t imagine that being the end of the world.
Energy is Wealth that the Ruling Class cannot horde.
Make more energy as cheaply as possible and people will be pulled up out of poverty. Reduce energy production and raise the cost and you will be sending people Back down into poverty.
Life the universe and everything in it is unjust, get used to it.
What do you mean by that comment? Are you implying that the uproar over the banning of natural gas is overblown?
Wait till she hears back from her district about the cost of that justice.
That will help empty out NYC quicker so it can become a theme park and musium of failed liberal thinking.
