A high-ranking official at the Seattle Fire Department was found dead Sunday, concluding a nearly two-week-long search after he failed to return from a hunting trip in central Washington.
Seattle Deputy Fire Chief Jay Schreckengost, 56, was found dead in the mountains near Cliffdell in Kittitas County on Sunday evening, just about a half-mile from the spot where his pickup truck was parked on Nov. 2, the day he went hunting. There was no preliminary evidence of suspicious activity or foul play, according to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office, which had led the massive search effort.

Rona Covid kilt ‘im.
I’m 60+ and can’t imagine not being able to crawl 1/2 mile with a broken leg bushwhacking with a GPS. Gaia GPS on the phone is a _great_ app to have for any kind of off road orienteering.
Heart attack, most likely..................
My firs thought was a heart attack. But these days, Covid and climate change are the go-to cause for just about everything.
This happened to my cousin who was a volunteer firefighter. While hunting alone he went into a diabetic seizure and died. Three day search and rescue effort and they found him when his Lab, who was laying right next to him, barked until they located her. She never left his side. It was three days of straight up trauma for my family, so I can only imagine the 12 days of hell this man’s family has gone through. 💔
Used to hike in Kittitas county - it’s one of those places that looks settled but about a quarter mile off the highway you’re in the tall and uncut. If you’re alone one heart attack and you’re done.
Heart attack?
Did he take the vax?
Somebody has to ask.
Awful thing regardless.
Well, if a stiff climb was located between you and that half
mile, it could make things very difficult.
When hiking alone, you really need to be very careful how
isolated you’re going to be. If you’re on a path that people
use, someone will find you. If not, you could be there a
while.
I’m a big supporter of a device that is small and you can
carry. It’s self-inflates and goes up 100+ feet.
Not only is it red, but it has an SOS light on it.
If you’re going to be alone, that is a must have > IMO.

Was he petting infected whitetail deer? Somebody has to ask.
” found dead... just about a half-mile from the spot where his pickup truck was parked”
” ...Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office, which had led the massive search effort.”
Two WEEKS of a MASSIVE search effort and he was only a half a mile from his vehicle?
Were they using a MASSIVE amount of BLIND volunteers?
Do you have to ask?
Climate change and/or Covid
What else can it be?
Was he perhaps in the Capitol on Jan 6 and they sent the death squad?
Then I guess you can’t imagine much. The terrain is very rough, the weather’s had lows in the 30s and rain, sunset’s at 4:30 in the afternoon, and depending on the severity of the broken leg - which could range up to a compound fracture of the femur - “bushwhacking” may be out of the question. I have a home in the area and it’s an unforgiving and remote environment.
We had a hunter assumed murdered up here a couple a years ago - they still haven’t his body. The perp was on foot and was able to avoid capture for months. He never travelled more than a couple of miles from the scene of the crime and despite a sophisticated, well organized search by hundreds of LEO and professional trackers, he was able to remain at large. He was captured when a local spotted him breaking into a building.
A half mile from his truck?? They weren’t looking very hard for him.
Maybe the Kittitas has a chapter of the Charles Milsap parachute corp?
My father had a stroke, and only died after a 10 month ordeal of paralysis, inability to speak, infection, and wasting away.
If given the choice, I know he would have definitely chosen to exit this world quickly, in the woods, with his rifle, hunting for elk.
They didn't find him as much as they followed the circling vultures.
I can’t but help of that bit in the movie Green Berets.
Or recently jabbed.
Surely they could at least say if it was an animal attack or he’d fallen off a cliff.
