CHICAGO — Chicago’s public school system has seen another enrollment drop with 10,000 fewer students this academic year since last year for a total of approximately 330,000 students.
The enrollment decline, which has been happening each year for the past decade, comes as other big city districts including New York and Los Angeles have seen enrollment declines this year as well. Chicago Public Schools managed to keep its ranking as the nation’s third-largest school district, but Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Florida reports coming close to Chicago.
Racial demographics have largely remained the same since last year. About 47% of the district’s students are Hispanic, approximately 36% are Black, about 11% are white and roughly 4% are Asian.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the drop a “minor miracle,” saying she was surprised enrollment didn’t decline even more considering the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Teachers Union blamed underfunded schools, particularly in largely Black and Hispanic neighborhoods, as a major driver.
The district’s new CEO Pedro Martinez said the district plans to take a deeper look at the pandemic’s impact on enrollment.

Is this based on butts in seats, or what the schools report to the state and feds in order to get compensation / assistance? Ghost payrolls are not limited to the Public Works Department and DMV.

As long as the families are remaining in Chicago and are in a private school or homeschooling, great. If they’re leaving Chicago for a red area, ugh.

Yeah, top heavy administration with 6 figure salaries and teachers with mid to high 5 digit salaries and all under perform. We need mo money.

WHITE FLIGHT. It’s been happening for decades out of Shitcago for decades and these numbers prove it.

Latinos outnumber Black residents for the first time while Chicago’s white population increased slightly and the number of Asians increased by 31%.
The city is now 31.4% white, 29.9% Latino, 28.7% Black and 6.9% Asian, according to the new census data compiled by The Associated Press and Big Local News.
Hoodrats don’t need an education to sell dope on the street corner, carjack, break into houses, pimp, and do all the things criminal hoodrats do. What I wonder is, where will they go when they have shot up and burned down their own neighborhoods?
I worked with Chicago Public Schools back in 2008.
About 800 schools in the system back then, and probably close to that now.
And the number of students has dropped by 1/3.
Much like Kansas City schools, which under a court decree couldn’t close any schools without permission, CPS will not have closed any schools.
So there are still 800+ principals, 4000+ assistant principals and over a hundred thousand teachers, counselors and other staff filling up the bloated carcass.
Most of whom make enough money to spend months in the Caribbean last year to escape “covid”. We heard about two of them. There were thousands that left Chicago and were still getting paid the full salary.
Corruption at its finest.
And don’t forget their exceedingly generous benefits and retirement programs.
All on top of absolute job security.
Quite a compensation package.
All paid for by taxpayers.
No wonder they fight so hard to protect their sinecures.
What a racket they have. The Mafia must be envious.
