If this was 1979, Biden would be wildly popular

U.S. used to rally behind a president when bad things happened abroad. Not any more. What happened in Tehran on Nov. 4, 1979, was an American president’s worst nightmare — especially when that president already had an approval rating hovering at just 30%, thanks to a lousy economy. An angry mob riled by that year’s Islamist revolution overran the U.S. Embassy in the Iranian capital, and by nightfall more than 50 Americans had been taken hostage. For a nation still reeling from its failure in the Vietnam War that ended just four years earlier, the Iranian hostage crisis made the United States look weak on a global stage.

Then something very strange happened — at least by today’s standards.

Carter or his State Dept. was warned about what might happen in Tehran but he ignored the warning.

LOL. I was 16YO in November of ‘79. Carters incompetence is what made me into a conservative. Few were rallying around that dope in late 79

Sorry - I lived through that - like Clinton - Carter was given a huge pass and looked weak on the world stage. It’s exactly why Reagan won in a landslide.

Biden wouldn’t have been elected. The population wasn’t degraded enough to accept an obvious pedophile yet.

When events are unforeseen, sure. When the nasty things are not only predictable but preventable and the {censored} in charge goes ahead anyway? No, there will be no rallying behind such poor “leadership.” In fact it is not even fair to call it poor leadership, it is a complete lack of any kind of leadership, any kind of care, concern, or competence. An epileptic monkey throwing feces at post-it notes on the wall would come up with a better plan.

The bloom was off the Carter rose in 1978. 1979 made people hate his guts.

Agreed. IMHO, Carter's "rise" in popularity was fake poll rigging engineered to create "news" of Carter's political comeback.

Almost everybody saw through the lie even though it was in the era before Algore invented the internet or Rush Limbaugh started his program. Even with no news source besides fake news people could see Carter wasn't becoming more popular.

This dummy is reading old fake polls that the press made up to make Carter look invincible in the election. He was like Hillary, right up until the vote was held the press kept saying he had a big lead. Then he got utterly stomped when the fake polls were put away and the real ones were taken in the voting booths.

Carter wasn't stomped because people thought he was dreamy.

In 1976 I was 23. I voted for Carter in ‘76.

I had a VW bus, hair down to my shoulders, tie dye shirts, smoked pot, was plainy drums in bar bands and followed the Grateful Dead all over most of the East Coast.

That was long time ago. Don't live like that anymore. Sober now, drive a compact car and drink coffee. Ah, youth fades away and gold turns to gray...

This event totally eclipsed the drama of my birthday. *pouts*

Years later, when discussing the “hostage crisis” with a coworker - a very nice, educated guy - he said, “Look at the bright side! You can turn the sound down on the video and pretend those Iranians chanting “death to America!” are actually chanting, “Happy birthday, Kristi! Happy birthday, Kristi!”

Americans were smarter as a people in 79 and much much more conservative in my opinion. Now half the population is woke.
