The Air Force said Tuesday it will allow airmen to wear morale patches on certain days, put hands in their pockets, and to tattoo their scalps as part of an upcoming revision to dress and appearance standards.
The changes, as well as several others, are expected to take effect in early October when the service plans to release an update to Instruction 36-2903, Dress and Appearance of Air Force Personnel.
The relaxed dress rules also will increase the length of hair allowed for men from the current 2 inches to 2.5 inches, and will allow women to wear 2-inch hair accessories, instead of the maximum 1-inch accessories now allowed.

If I were a fighter pilot, I'd shave my head and have my squadron patch tattooed on my head, inverted!

And just why?? All the changes are absolutely stupid and unnecessary.

And the updated AFI will allow airmen with piercings to wear transparent spacers, so their piercings don't close up.

Air force mittens are now codified. That was a conscious decision. Off into the wild blue yonder indeed.

Crap like this is why I retired early from DoD back in 2017. I couldn’t take it anymore. Our military and our country are being turned inside out.

Morale patches are patches troops wear on their uniforms designed to be a funny inside joke, applicable only to their specific unit or military career field. They are usually worn during deployments, but the wear of morale patches is at the discretion of the unit’s commander. Actually, the ones I've seen are positive. Does not mean they won't become woke in time.

And just why?? All the changes are absolutely stupid and unnecessary. The military is desperate to recruit and retain individuals from a shrinking pool of candidates. They don't expect these people to stick around past a first tour but need them to fill certain tasks. Sadly, adding them to the group is going to chase out a lot of bright and capable people.

.....it will allow airmen to wear morale patches on certain days,.....I can't even imagine what this is supposed to mean. I retired from USAF in 1999. I don't think I would join today with this kind of crap going on.....

I had never heard them referred to as morale patches, but I remember seeing pilots wear patches on their flight suits that weren’t official military.
One might wear a Harley Davidson patch, and another have one for his/her hobby, etc.
I guess we could com[pare them to some of the paintings we’ve seen on military aircraft. It’s a way to feel an ownership of the plane and make it personal, I guess.
I was in telecommunications, so I only went to the flight line area to do equipment repair. I didn’t wear a flight suit, so I wasn’t able to wear them.
I guess they were disallowed at some point, and they’re coming back.
