New and Used Car Prices Soar Due to Microchip Shortage

A microchip shortage is translating to higher car prices across America.

CBS reported that the average price of a new car has topped $40,000 and that used car prices have risen nearly 30 percent due to the shortage.

Lansing, Michigan, resident Heather Lyons knows that firsthand.

In looking to buy a replacement for a totaled car, she said she will end up paying more to get less, according to WILX-TV.

“It really is bad. My car payment last time for a decent vehicle was something I could afford and this time it’s going to be a worse vehicle for more than I was paying before,” Lyons said.

She said she is paying $4,000 more than she did for a similar car a year ago.

Dealers admit prices are high.

Out of my price range and nowhere to store it.

Besides 6’3 270 me might have a problem getting in it and there had better be some aftermarket air conditioning or NBC system like an Abrams has.

Um, private sellers are asking high, too, because...they can now.

Same with houses.

Yep. FSBO is a joke these days since so many trade in or sell to CarMax. There are 7 F150s 4wd CC V8 FSBO within 500 miles of me and less than 50 in the entire country

I hope to bring my steamed cleaned Willys chassis and drivetrain home next weekend.

The logistics just didn’t line up this weekend.

ROTFLMAO!

My 750 hp mustang gets 28 mpg at 65 on the highway.

Five driving modes. Rain/snow nice on wet days.

That was kind of my point. I have three vehicles, all three of which I bought off craigslist. A twenty-year old Ranger, a 14-year old Yaris and a 10 year old Corolla. They have all been great vehicles and are still going strong. I keep an eye on craigslist and nothing has come up in my price/value range for a long time.

i’m selling a 1988 ford f250 that’s all original, rust free, never wrecked, and 93,000 documented miles if anyone is interested...

I had one of those for 17 years, 4X4, great truck. Sold it in 2005.

A last generation half track might work better for me.

The Rat Patrol had plenty of them around as German vehicles.

My dad has a long bed 4x4 Dodge diesel he uses on construction jobs some. It’s a 99 or thereabouts. I used it some when lost my Tacoma in an unplanned and nearly fatal amphibious misadventure.

He has gotten essentially blank check offers for it.

I tried selling my old project and sort of running K5 blazer and got no nibbles except for people wanting the shell.

I kind of lost interest in it for a while.

Maybe what I saw a long time ago might apply or maybe it’s all an absurd delusion.

There’s 13 55-57 Chevies out in my field, the only chips in them are in the windshields.
