Colorado police on Friday explained how a heroic bystander who had just shot and killed a cop-hating gunman was himself fatally struck by a responding officer.
Johnny Hurley, 40, was shopping in downtown Arvada, a Denver suburb, when he heard Ronald Troyke ambush and murder Officer Gordon Beesley, who was responding to a call Monday afternoon, officials said.
Troyke, 59, then returned to his truck to grab an AR-15, and was holding it when Hurley — who was carrying a concealed weapon — confronted him and shot him dead, Police Chief Link Strate said in a video clip posted Friday. But when another officer responded to the scene, he saw Hurley holding the suspect’s rifle — and tragically mistook the good Samaritan for the cop killer, fatally shooting him, Strate said.

This is so sad...
Unnamed cop. Victim must not be a jogger.
When the bad guys are down and the police are coming, job #1 is not being taken for a bad guy.
Sooooo, when are the riots happening?
Oh, wait...
Cops are bad for your health. They are stupid, and they are trained to kill you. It ain’t like it was fifty years ago.
I can’t say it was wise for the good samaritan to pick up the perp’s firearm, although it doesn’t seem likely he pointed it at officers. Nevertheless, he was shot and killed anyway. Us peasants tend to get charged with murder when we do that sort of thing.
This incident should show how dangerous it can be to make bold assumptions. The cop assumed WAY too much, and IMO, people in general seem to think that they’re qualified to make all kinds of wild assumptions. It’s a form of self-empowerment and I get that, but when they’re proven to be wrong it can be very disappointing to them, especially when they assume the worst about somebody they don’t really know, which is usually the case.
no warning?
We live in a society which (on average) is ever more educated yet also dumber. Think about that.
You are sooooo right!
Not anymore. Don’t take any chances. Shoot first and ask questions later.
Cops are qualified to assume quickly.....thier life depends upon it as well as others. Now we’re hearing cops aren’t doing enough...They’re dam*ed if they do and don’t. Further the public isn’t exactly what once was normal either. I no longer neighbor for that reason.
These are not the times for conservatives or anyone else with at least half a brain to be moving with. In fact, it’s just the opposite!
Law enforcement is empowered by its official badge and the authority it represents, so the cop is theoretically “qualified” but is supposed to be held to a higher or the highest standard. However, civilians must take it upon themselves to make any wild and dangerous assumptions, and who or what could it be that qualifies them, and to what standard are they supposed to be held to?
......”Law enforcement is empowered by its official badge and the authority it represents, so the cop is theoretically “qualified” but is supposed to be held to a higher or the highest standard”......
The majority do just that.
.....”Civilians must take it upon themselves to make any wild and dangerous assumptions, and who or what could it be that qualifies them, and to what standard are they supposed to be held to?”.....
No civilian should be “taking it upon themselves” to interfer in a police officials capacity to pursue, arrest or engage in an active and onging event.
You lost all credibility on this site when you defended the cops (who have been fired/arrested) who slammed the old dementia lady in Colorado...
It’s best you sit this one out.
So much for the "best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun" argument.
But, luckily, the unnamed cop got to go home that evening.
