Underwater avalanche continued for two days
bbc ^

Scientists are reporting what they say is the longest sediment avalanche yet measured in action.

It occurred underwater off West Africa, in a deep canyon leading away from the mouth of the Congo River.

Something in excess of a cubic kilometre of sand and mud descended into the deep.

This colossal flow kept moving for two whole days and ran out for more than 1,100km across the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.

The event would have gone unrecorded were it not for the fact that the slide broke two submarine telecommunications cables, slowing the internet and other data traffic between Nigeria and South Africa in the process.

And also because of the prescient action of researchers who had lined the length of the Congo Canyon with instruments capable of measuring current and sediment velocities.

"We had a series of oceanographic moorings that were hit by the event, which broke them from their seafloor anchors so that they popped up to send us an email," said Prof Peter Talling from Durham University, UK.

Article is worth reading as are some of the links,

It's hard to overstate the importance of the global submarine cable network.

More than 99% of all data traffic between continents goes through these connections, including daily money transfers to the value of trillions of dollars.

The cables themselves are under water. Thus, “submarine.”

Not cables attached to submarines, something out of a Kramerica episode.

I keep hoping for that landslide in the Canary Islands to let go. I’d die laughing at an 80 foot tsunami flushing the DC toilet.

So a Nigerian prince might not get his money for a few days?

Give Elon Musk enough time and he could make a significant dent in that percentage.

Can you imagine the underwater vibrations and that ROAR coming from the avalanche? Jacques Cousteau would have had a field day.

The underwater animals, they were all a-scattering if not trapped.
Maybe this is how it is when Tectonic Plates shift to and fro before earthquakes, before tsunamis.

Good thing it took two days instead of 10 mins ... would have spawned the mother of all tsunamis had it been the latter.

I’d die laughing at an 80 foot tsunami flushing the DC toilet.

Unfortunately it will likely flush my toilet here in South Carolina, too.

This helps support my understanding of large earth moving changes takes place over a very short period of time
here is the white paper

Haha..

I’m actually good with math and several languages.

When I’m in a Spanish-speaking country I can get by with what I know, look it up, or find a translator.

But in my own country I shouldn’t have to bother.

Same with foreign units of measure. In my own country I shouldn’t have to do a conversion to figure out how fast something is going.

Then some people will argue that if I’m reading a foreign scientific journal translated to English, I should expect metric units of measure. My answer there is - if they are going to bother translating it, why didn’t they translate the units of measure?

Funny story. I was driving home from a trip and saw a patrol car just as I was passing through a 25mph zone. I slowed down and checked my speed - to my surprise, I was still going 40! I slowed down even more and was finally down to about 25 when the cop pulled up beside me and signaled for me to roll down my window.

I stopped, rolled it down and he said: “why so slow?”

As soon as he said that I realized what happened: my 2007 Honda Civic has a mph/kph switch right next to the trip counter and I must have accidentally toggled it.

No harm done this time - the cop laughed. But brainlessly accommodating foreign languages and units of measure is not just an annoyance - it is a mark of what pussies Americans have become - thanks to the Left.

We could only wish!!! Don’t worry friend, that day IS COMING. I don’t think it is that far away. I think the LORD will soon make His appearance and this mess is all going to get straightened out. By HIS standards!!!
