Masks in Cars: What's Behind America's COVID-19 Insanity
Townhall.com ^ | May 7, 2021 | Neil Patel

If you wanted to teach a class on how to cause confusion and distrust, you would follow the U.S. government's coronavirus playbook. A lot has been written about the historically low levels of trust Americans have in their leaders and institutions. There's been less analysis on what happens when a government has no faith in its own citizens. We are seeing the results today. From the start of the pandemic, health authorities have chosen gamesmanship over honesty. This has resulted in muddled and inconsistent messaging from national leaders. The end result is a broken country of citizens at one another's throats. Mask fights, deboarding flights and, of course, the crazy people driving around alone in their cars with masks on all stem, at least in part, from a government that refused to treat Americans like adults who could handle the truth.

It's important to note that the government has done a lot of good things in response to COVID-19. In the area of vaccine development, we have done more, faster than any other large country. The combination of heavy government subsidies and an innovative free market system produced strong, reliable vaccines at a record pace. We crushed efforts by China, Russia and others to fight COVID-19 with medical innovations. This is why America is ahead of Europe and most of the world. We should celebrate the much-maligned pharmaceutical industry and the administrations of both President Donald Trump, whose Operation Warp Speed was a historic achievement, and President Joe Biden, who helped quicken the vaccine distribution. Outside of medical innovation, however, the government's response has been marked by a failed communications plan that shows extreme distrust of the American people.

The government famously began their COVID-19 communications with a lie about masks. Despite what some of the fever swampers may tell you, masks work. That's why doctors wear them around sick people. They aren't perfect, of course, but they do help. Numerous high-ranking officials took part in the lie that mask's aren't effective, including Dr. Anthony Fauci. They defend the lie now by noting, correctly, that we needed to conserve as many masks as we could for health care workers who truly needed them. Fair enough, but there was another option that our leaders didn't seem to consider: Tell the truth. They could have told the American people that it's going to require some sacrifice and that we need to come together as a society to fight this contagious disease. They could have told everyone that the first step of the fight is saving the professionally made masks and other protective equipment for the first responders. As part of this message, they could have reminded people that the young and healthy probably weren't in extreme danger (something we already knew, even then). There will always be people on the margins who won't cooperate, but I would bet most Americans would have rallied around such an honest message.

After lying about the masks, the government lied about lockdowns. Remember when this all started and we were told to lock down briefly in order to "flatten the curve"? In many states, that turned into extended lockdowns that destroyed American businesses and families. Why? Couldn't people have managed to safely go about some semblance of life while taking some prudent precautions? Our government never gave them the chance.

We have known for months that wearing masks outside when walking or running is just silly. The air dissipates quickly, and the research shows these fleeting encounters with others aren't responsible for much disease transmission. The risk is tiny, yet in many places, outdoor mask mandates were the norm. Now, for those who have been vaccinated, the risk is negligible. Yet it took a while after vaccinations were available for the CDC to change their outdoor mask guidance, and leaders are still not able to send a consistent message. Did you see the picture of Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband kissing each other outdoors with their masks on? What message are they trying to send with that insanity?

Intentions aside, people are getting two messages. The first is that the truly responsible people are still wearing their masks, so we all should. This has likely caused more conflict on America's streets than any other government communications foible. The second message is the vaccine doesn't seem to help much. If the vaccines work as well as our officials claim, why are they all still running around outside with their masks on? It's a reasonable question, yet it's one that all these smart people don't seem to have considered.

The biggest and most destructive part of the government's dishonesty is school closures. The kids should be back in school. The scientists have agreed for a long time now that the risks of in-class learning are manageable. On this one, the dishonesty is of a slightly more sinister variety. Just look at which politicians are making excuses for the school closures and where all the teachers unions political donations go.

All the dishonesty and gamesmanship from top national leaders comes with huge downsides. The next time the government has something important to say, about vaccines, for instance, people will be less likely to believe it.

Yup. The 6pm news here is basically a COVID/Jab infomercial.

They made it so the average person thinks 10 million people are dead and even 30 year olds are dying in droves.

Exactly. It’s easier to keep the mask on, when driving from one place to another. I even forget I’m wearing a mask sometimes.

I live in Japan . I was in Fukuoka last week - population 1 and a half million . Other than myself , on the street and in the station , etc...I saw 3 people WITHOUT masks the whole time I was there . 80% of people in cars wear masks . The kids wear masks while playing in the park because their schooteachers and parents tell them to . Crazy flucking world .

If you’re on your way to the grocery store, you’ll be wearing a mask to go in the store. There’s a stoplight near my store and I sometimes put the mask on when the light is red as I’m about to turn into the parking lot.

It literally takes three seconds to put on a mask.

I keep mine in my pocket and just about when I'm entering the store, I slap it on. The as soon as I exit the doors, I rip it off and stuff it back in my pocket for next time.

It's utter nonsense and I would love to just walk through the grocery store without a mask and trigger all the Karens. But that is not the hill to die on. Plus I need my groceries so getting banned from my local grocery store is not a good move.

Having a mask on when you are in your car just makes you look stupid.

It would be more hazardous, as well as more time consuming, to take off the mask between stops.

How would it be either hazardous or time consuming?

It is not a bunny suit. It can be removed in a fraction of a second.

As for hazardous... please.

Doesn’t matter what kind of mask either or if you have a full beard. Any piece of cloth hanging on your face magically prevents spread of this virus.

It’s comical seeing a big ole burly guy who has a full beard wearing one of those little china made surgeon’s mask.

Wearing your mask below your nose seems to be ok too.

I put one on approaching a drive thru window at McD’s, too.

Good grief.

I have found that my mask tends to ride up the bridge of my nose and interferes with my ability to see things right below me.

Just the other day I walked into a Wet Floor sign knocking it over.

If masks do limit your field of vision and/or distract you in any way, then you are an idiot and a fool to drive with one on.

NO! NO! NO! TOTAL F*CKING BULLSH*T!

So many people this past year have been wearing what kind of masks? Cloth masks! Made from the kind of cloth one can get at the crafts stores! And these same type of cloth masks, in all sort of patterns and emblems on them, are sold in all sorts of stores and made by different companies. Women can even buy yoga pants with matching masks!

The CDC isn’t saying don’t wear cloth masks now and wasn’t months ago. They are saying wear masks period.

The CDC could have said from the beginning to wear a cloth mask. It would have had no impact on the availability of medical grade masks for medical staff.

Sorry for the ! points. I am not a bigger user of them usually. But this stupid “point” made by this author and many others who have made the same one, really p*sses me off.

Idiocy. Idiocy. That is the only thing. Perhaps fear, but...if you are that afraid, you have bigger issues.

I cannot even ascribe it to Sheep Behavior. It is people who are nearly mentally ill with fear, and people who are determined to virtue signal because they believe in "The Covid Cause".

And for them, it is "a cause".

I was listening to Dennis Prager last week and a guy called in to say the reason he wore a mask inside his car was that it was too big of a problem to take off his mask between going to the grocery store and his work place.

This seems pretty normal to me. Yeah, I had the mask on inside my car — for the 20 seconds it took me to enter the parking lot and park. I put one on approaching a drive thru window at McD’s, too. Take it off as I drive away.

Why is this a big deal?

I agree. Occasionally I have my mind on how much I spend and drive half a mile before I realized I still have the damn thing on. I make no judgments about the people I seeing wearing masks who are driving around in the heavy strip mall areas.

This describes my sister-in-law and her husband to a Tee.

Both have been vaccinated and still they wear masks because they do not want to infect anyone!!!!!!

You ain't seen nuthin’ yet! Wait till they tell us we have to wear our underwear on the outside so that the Underwear Police can see if it's clean.

Violators will be put into quarantine.

On another thread, this morning, there is a conspiracy theory mentioned that maybe people wear a mask when alone in their car to resist the urge to lick the windows.

That really is sick puppy territory.

I suspect this goes way beyond mere convenience or safety when driving between locations that are in close proximity. Out of the many people I've seen wearing masks while driving, at least half of them have also been wearing rubber gloves in the vehicle.

This is certifiable lunacy.
