A team of researchers with the Westfalen-Lippe Landscape Association revealed during a presentation in the city of Schmallenberg that one of the largest hoards of Iron Age weapons in western Germany had been unearthed at a nearby dig site on a small mountain in Wilzenberg. In their press release, the researchers note that they found approximately 100 Celtic Iron Age artifacts—primarily through the use of a metal detector.

Those would be dated long before the Hun invasion, and probably during the step by step migration of the Celts from Turkey (Anatolia) and eventually into western Europe (France, England, Scotland, Wales, etc.). Not entirely the same “Germanic” (word translated from Latin) people.

I’m guessing that those swords were bent up and discarded when replaced with swords with stronger tangs. Good tangs were a problem with many swords that needed to be re-engineered and made.

It could be that the weapons found got damaged in the melee, and so many undamaged ones or just better ones were available that the victors left the crap and took off with the booty.

Someday, archeologists will come to the site of my home and find the biggest hoard of carbon-steel age weapons ever excavated.
