One of the biggest Iron Age weapon hoards in western Germany unearthed

A team of researchers with the Westfalen-Lippe Landscape Association revealed during a presentation in the city of Schmallenberg that one of the largest hoards of Iron Age weapons in western Germany had been unearthed at a nearby dig site on a small mountain in Wilzenberg. In their press release, the researchers note that they found approximately 100 Celtic Iron Age artifacts—primarily through the use of a metal detector.

Those would be dated long before the Hun invasion, and probably during the step by step migration of the Celts from Turkey (Anatolia) and eventually into western Europe (France, England, Scotland, Wales, etc.). Not entirely the same “Germanic” (word translated from Latin) people.

I’m guessing that those swords were bent up and discarded when replaced with swords with stronger tangs. Good tangs were a problem with many swords that needed to be re-engineered and made.

Notably, most of the swords, spears and lances had been severely damaged. The swords were bent into halves or thirds and the spears and lance tips had been blunted

Ancient version of weapons buy back program?.................

Either that, or they were beating their swords into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks and these were the ones that failed..................

It could be that the weapons found got damaged in the melee, and so many undamaged ones or just better ones were available that the victors left the crap and took off with the booty.
