At some point in the next few weeks, a B-52H bomber will carry a missile high into the air and launch it at an unprecedented velocity toward its target, according to the U.S. Air Force. If everything goes according to plan, that missile will accelerate to more than five times the speed of sound before deploying a dummy second stage that will promptly "disintegrate" somewhere in the atmosphere.
The missile, known as AGM-183A, is supposed to be the first hypersonic weapon — or Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) — in the U.S. arsenal. It should move so quickly through the atmosphere — about 20 times the speed of sound — at such low altitudes that it's impossible for enemy missile defense systems to shoot out of the air. And its speed means that it can be useful for destroying "high-value, time-sensitive targets," the Air Force said in a statement.
Hypersonic missile designs, including this one, typically involve two stages.

Throughout history technological advances rarely benefit one side decisively for very long. The most poorly kept secrets are military secrets. The outcome of political struggles ( war is political struggle by a means other than diplomacy or peaceful persuasion) depends far more on organization, skill, and the willingness to fight for an idea or a cuase by dedicated people who will not accept defeat. Resources of course matter but often they are not the decisive factor in the ultimate outcomes. Begs the question: Does enough of a common consensus of values continue to exist in the American nation among its people that enough rational men are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice on its behalf to preserve it? A hypersonic missile will not save the nation.

All this is true. Without propulsion, I dont see how the glider can add anything significant to the missile for range.
Take your average ballistics calculator. A bullet with a ballistic coefficient of 1.0 (which is way better than any bullet I know of) launched at 4600 ft/sec (~mach 6) at 15000' altitude, is already down to ~3400 ft/sec after only 1 nautical mile (2000 yards).
Using a different calculator, at 25000' altitude starting at 5000 ft/sec you are still at only 700 ft/sec after 10000 yards. (5 NM)
The lower you go the greater the drag force. The higher you go, the easier to see and track.

But the laser system would have to: (a) detect the weapon and (b) stay on target long enough to damage said target.
Currently there is no laser weapon (even Israeli laser weapons) that can accomplish such a task. The weapon is just closing too fast over the horizon.

I agree with your assessment 100%. Defiantly NOT written by anyone even tangentially familiar with weapon systems development.
Lasers have atmospheric challenges at distance too. You have to be able to keep the beam focused and tracking going through a dynamic atmosphere which wants to spread the energy. This was the challenge for ABL. ABL worked but was not able to reliably do its mission from safe (outside enemy missile range) standoff distances. Shooting down a missile at tens or hundreds of miles is not like shooting down an Iranian drone hovering three miles away.
