I hate to see Fry’s go to. But, to be honest I haven’t been in one of their stores in years. Actually can’t recall the last time I was in one. I live on the north side of the metroplex and it’s just too much of a hike, traffic, etc, to get to one.
The very first Fry’s was in a hard-to-find part of Palo Alto, CA. Maybe ten years ago I noticed that their inventory levels of products was always low. Then about five years ago they removed the high shelves and replaced them with chest-high shelves. Inventory continued to shrink. The whole place shut down a year ago. It was obvious it was only a matter of time.
Now where will people go to look at products before buying them on Amazon?
The Boston & Kansas MicroCenter locations do rather well.
If Liberals can blame Trump for crazy stuff, I can blame Biden for things... 😃
Same here. Haven’t been in well over a year. I rebuild my PCs from used high end Dells. Big savings and if I destroy something it’s not a big loss $. So far I’ve built 7 or 8 over the years and never had a bad experience. Just order the components as i upgrade them.
It seems our economy is becoming dependent on Amazon. I can start a small business that is only viable if I team up with Amazon.
...then what if Amazon doesn’t like me? At the flick of a switch they can turn me off.
Amazon is already way too powerful.
My wife is shopping for a new PC. She wants a desktop and has been researching options. Essentially there are none where we can go and pick one up. She’ll need to order it.
She’s also getting a laptop.
I remember the Fry’s in San Jose back in the 90’s. You could easily spend a day in there. I was so excited when they opened in GA, then so disappointed when I went in. Not remotely the same store. More on par with Best Buy with the addition of a few odd or obscure items.
How did you manage to blow up one of my converter EVMs?
What part is that?
Order a brand name refurb from Newegg.
Lol!
Those aren’t my photos. I found them online and posted them here as examples of “fried electronics”.
Thanks. I’ll let her know
I haven’t heard the word ‘anti-trust’ in about 20 years.
Anyone else notice that? We have entire government agencies that are there for no other reason than to prevent monopolies.
When MSFT wouldn’t play ball with the Clinton Admin in the 90’s, Bill threatened to break them into six pieces. I know first hand, because at the time we were consulting MSFT on it. At the time, they had ONE lobbyist in Olympia. From one lobbyist, they created the biggest lobbying function on the planet.
The game is rigged. I heard Paul Allen say, “I cannot believe that they would do this to the company responsible for creating this economy!!”
Mayor of Redmond used to march into Bill Gate’s office demanding this, that, and the other like they were stuck in Redmond.
The Corporatism (Fascism) you see today is directly related to those actions in the 90’s. The guy that first lowered the boom on Bill on playing ball with the D’s was my ex’s cousin. A senator, and a collection of malignant useless cells. He was a senior senator on the Senate Banking Committee during the 2008 meltdown. The man’s life amounted to damage. He made history.
The Establishment wants to kill us all.
Sad. You could get anything at Fry’s. I know the family who owns (used to own) this company.
No problem. Then drop Linux Mint on it and you’re good to go.
I live near one. Used to stop there frequently if I needed anything electronic or computer related. If their shelves had remained stocked I would have continued to shop there for the convenience. But they have had a “going out of business” attitude for at least a couple of years. Last time I walked in last summer the store was almost entirely empty and I just turned around and left and have not been back. I wondered if they were still open. It is sad to see them go, but they’ve pretty much been gone for at least a couple of years.
I had two of those Power Amps. Dynaco kits that you built yourself. Of course this was before MOS FETs. Traditional transistor that would overheat and thermally runaway into a fire starter mode. Heavy, no switching power supplies yet.
Sigh... Sad days for us computer geeks.
....adieu Fry's I knew ye well....
Amazon casualty.
I'd say poor service and crap products probably had more to do with it.
Still thread spamming I see.
And not discerning enough to recognize the difference between “fry” and “Fry’s”
