If the sequence of the target gene varies between two different populations the technique could be used to interrupt key body functions in one population and not the other. Don’t do a ancestry DNA test to see where your roots or origins are from. You are giving them your DNA markers for their fun and pleasure.

The idea that you cannot make a weapon to take advantage of that is ludicrous.
If there was for example a “Gay” gene, the world could and would eliminate Homosexuality.
The problem with using genetics to eliminate what YOU find undesirable is the un-intended consequences. So even if a “Gay” gene is identified, it will not be revealed to the general public as would be the case for racial identification, other problems like cancers, and congenital tendencies for physical problems.
See the problems China has with too many men due to the one child policy. Boys are a families “social security”. So they illegally aborted their girls, as boys are a better investment for your old age. Result, a very warped population and whatever problems that will produce.
