Vanity: Could glossolalia be ACB's undoing?

Posted on 09/22/2020 4:43:38 PM PDT by EverTrumper

I didn't know there's a word for it, but google defines glossolalia as:

"the phenomenon of (apparently) speaking in an unknown language, especially in religious worship. It is practiced especially by Pentecostal and charismatic Christians."

I have a feeling that the Democrats aren't fighting back as hard as I expected on the potential ACB nomination.

They have a plan to destroy her, and maybe glossolalia (aka speaking in tongues) will be their means of attack.

I can see Kamala asking her, "Do you believe that you have the Gift of Tongues?"

You do realize that the only sin Jesus said was unforgiveable was blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

But please, continue with your misinformed bigotry.

You're ignorant. :-D

The Pentecostal movement took off in the early 1900s (Azusa Street in San Fran), and long predates the Charismatic Catholics. Or, you can look over in Britain, e.g. Smith Wigglesworth.

Most Christians think the speaking in tongues act is almost as silly as I do.

Can you cite one instance in the Bible where someone (like those claiming to ‘speak in tonuges’ today) speaks a language that NO ONE knows?

1 Corinthians 14:9-18.

St. Paul himself.

The gifts of God are not determined by Facebook likes.

The funny thing is, speaking of Gifts of the Spirit, tongues are one of the lesser ones.

It's odd so many people concentrate on that one gift to the detriment / exclusion of the others.

“So the group Mel Gibson belongs to is not a sect of Catholicism?”

Mel Gibson is a sedevacantist. Sedevacantism cannot be properly cast as a “sect of Catholicism” since there is no such thing as a “sect of Catholicism”. There are only Catholic Churches - not Catholic sects. Sedevacantists fall into a special category even within the Catholic understanding of imperfect unity with Catholic Church. They can very easily be accepted as Catholics in full unity with the Catholic Church and never be thought of as having been in a sect.

Even Wikipedia knows:
The unpardonable sin is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Blasphemy includes ridicule and attributing the works of the Holy Spirit to the devil.

I asked for a specific example of someone speaking a tongue that no one else knew.

Please tell me the exact sentence you are referring to where Paul ACTUALLY speaks in an tongue unknown to anyone else?

What does God think about attributing works of the devil to the Holy Spirit?

In the church that I just left, the Pastors wife had the whole church (minus me) mesmerized when she told of how she ‘taught’ two young boys how to speak in tongues. I think this is how modern tongues started and continues. In the Bible, no one knew anything about tongues prior to the gift being given by the Holy Spirit. It was ONLY given by the Holy Spirit! Now, it is passed on by peer pressure from HUMANS who think they can push it on their peers and children and the peers think they are missing something if they don’t join in.

I think you would agree that actual languages are spoken in the Bible. Others there understood them. But please explain to me why of the thousands of videos on youtube, there is not ONE SINGLE video of someone speaking an actual known language that someone knows today?

...and who do you think is at work here? Think the guy got the house? Or the other guy got the car? I could send you these videos all day. Think non believers watch this and get brought closer to Christ? Not a chance! And why would God give a ‘gift’ that resulted in turning people from Christ?

Nonsense, both your post and the heretical and non-Biblical protestant doctrine of Sola Fide.

You know, even in Northern Ireland "The Troubles" finally ended.

Are you stupid, trolling, or just dishonest?

Paul comes out and says in so many words.

15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer,[d] say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying?

and verse 18

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

The church in Corinth was immature, and prayed “unintelligibly” during the Service.
(see verses 6-12).

Paul comes down on them, not that “look, it’s gibberish, this wasn’t the same as Pentecost” but “if someone speaks in tongues during the service, someone else should interpret; otherwise speak in your native language, and seek for the higher gifts like prophecy, in order to build up the Church. As for me, yeah, I speak in tongues, but while I’m in a gathering with other believers, I’d rather speak in regular language, so the others will get the benefit of my speech, and not just me.”

St. Paul's way ahead of you again.

Again, 1 Corinthians 14 --

23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

So it's quite obvious, that tongues as practised in Corinth, during New Testament times, included "unknown" tongues. But the issue Paul has with it, is that other gifts build up the Body of Christ more, and that the Corinthian believers were not seeking the higher gifts.

So what? Paul also said he wished that those who were pushing circumcision, would go all the way and emasculate themselves.
