Paul comes out and says in so many words.
15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer,[d] say Amen to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying?
and verse 18
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
The church in Corinth was immature, and prayed “unintelligibly” during the Service.
(see verses 6-12).
Paul comes down on them, not that “look, it’s gibberish, this wasn’t the same as Pentecost” but “if someone speaks in tongues during the service, someone else should interpret; otherwise speak in your native language, and seek for the higher gifts like prophecy, in order to build up the Church. As for me, yeah, I speak in tongues, but while I’m in a gathering with other believers, I’d rather speak in regular language, so the others will get the benefit of my speech, and not just me.”
...someone else should interpret...

How can someone interpret an unknown language?

Yup. That’s a real Christian way of going about discussing a topic.
