Washington Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah indicated Tuesday he supports moving forward with consideration of a Supreme Court nominee during an election year, providing crucial backing to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as he proceeds with filling the vacancy on the high court just weeks before Election Day.
"The Constitution gives the President the power to nominate and the Senate the authority to provide advice and consent on Supreme Court nominees," Romney said in a statement. "Accordingly, I intend to follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the president's nominee. If the nominee reaches the Senate floor, I intend to vote based upon their qualifications."
Romney noted that the historical precedent of nominations made to the Supreme Court during an election year is for the Senate not to confirm the nominee put forth by the opposing party, but to confirm the pick of its own.
"My decision regarding a Supreme Court nomination is not the result of a subjective test of 'fairness' which, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder," he said. "It is based on the immutable fairness of following the law, which in this case is the Constitution and precedent."
Romney's support for proceeding with the confirmation process for a successor to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Friday, provides McConnell with the backing needed from his party to move to fill the vacant seat swiftly. Just two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, have said they are opposed to confirming a new Supreme Court justice before the November 3 election. Four Republicans would need to defect in order to block a nominee.

DO IT A WEEK FROM TODAY!!
This year is not an accidental term. McConnell used it and now Romney. It doesn’t mean before the election by any stretch. Just something to keep in mind.
And give the pedophile an excuse to renege on the debate? ;-)
Mittens afraid he’s being cut out apparently.
Better do it a few days before the election. Democrats won’t know what to do. Attack Trump or Barrett lol. The meltdown will be epic.
The words are deliberate, to deceive us.
None of our domestic enemies want another Trumo SCOTUS appointee, including and especially Romney.
Like 2016, all their chips are on an enemy win on Nov. 3.
Why to go Delecto!
It may just be that they don’t want to promise that it will be done before the election because they may not have enough time to hold the hearings and a vote while also allowing the senators up for re-election to campaign. Keeping the Senate majority is pretty important in its own right.
He represents a Mormon state, and he is Mormon himself. I never doubted that he would go along with Trumps SC pick.He would lose a huge part of his base, the Mormon Church, if he did not comply.
He didn’t say he’d vote to approve, just that he’s in favor of having a vote.
POTUS announces on Saturday Sept. 26, McConnell sets the floor vote for Tuesday the 29th. POTUS swears in new Justice on Friday Oct. 2nd.
End of story, no need to give the demonrats any time to try and destroy the nominee.
Sure!
He says he will vote.
But will it be a yes or a no vote.
I do not trust him.
AMEN!!!
What’s up with that?
What’s in it for him?
Why did the Turtle cross the road?
To get to the Shell Station. Fill ‘er up and let’s ROLL!
I believe his constituents overwhelmingly support voting this year. He can read the tea leaves.
YES! this is great news! another SC justice by our president!
