This year is not an accidental term. McConnell used it and now Romney. It doesn’t mean before the election by any stretch. Just something to keep in mind.
The words are deliberate, to deceive us.
None of our domestic enemies want another Trumo SCOTUS appointee, including and especially Romney.
Like 2016, all their chips are on an enemy win on Nov. 3.
It may just be that they don’t want to promise that it will be done before the election because they may not have enough time to hold the hearings and a vote while also allowing the senators up for re-election to campaign. Keeping the Senate majority is pretty important in its own right.
Didnt Graham say it would happen before the election? I know hes not the decider, but thought he was pretty open about it.
Hearings take time. It doesn’t just happen overnight. The amount of paperwork and things with SCOTUS nominees is intense.
And framkly, I think it is better for us politically to vote after the election so it is seen as taking our time, not rushing to get it done before. It will also motivate our base while not riling up the other side as much as if we had voted just a week or two before the election and pissed them off more than they already are.
I cant seem to find it right now, but in another statement, Romney was even more accommodating.
He said that he will [paraphrasing] support whatever process and timetable the President and Senate Leadership settle on.
To me, it sounded like he is perfectly fine with scheduling the confirmation before the election.
