The flower is encircled by stars representing Mississippi as the 20th state. It also has a single star made of diamond shapes representing the Native American people who lived on the land before others arrived.

Much as I hate the political correctness that forced the retirement of the old flag, I have to admit that this new design looks pretty decent.

As a side note to this thread, please consider the following about federal government versus state government flags.
Noting that Constitution-ignoring FDR is responsible for the national flag displaying regulations that we have today, the states need to stop displaying the flag of the constitutionally limited power federal government above the flags of the sovereign states on flagpoles.
Instead, the national flag can displayed either at the same level as state flag on another pole, or below the state flag if on same flagpole.
And for those patriots who think that the corrupt, unconstitutionally big federal government is the greatest invention since sliced bread, you can hang federal flag above your state flag on 4th of July.

The Texas state flag is definitely one of the best. It is fairly similar to the flag of Chile. I wonder which flag is older.
