The NFL team formerly known as the Redskins will go by the Washington Football Team for at least the 2020 season, giving the organisation time to choose a new, full-time name.
Gone is the Indian head logo and the name Native American advocates have called a dictionary-defined racial slur.
Here to stay are the burgundy and gold colours that are synonymous with the franchise's storied history.
Executive vice-president and chief marketing officer Terry Bateman, who was hired on Monday to oversee the name change and rebranding process, called the temporary design "a nice link between the history and the future".
"This is an organic kind of move," Bateman said in a phone interview on Thursday (local time).
"We wanted to think it through and really try to figure out what is the best approach for us, for the community, for the fans, for everybody, and came to the conclusion that what we wanted to do was to go slow with the renaming process and really be very thoughtful, very inclusive, respectful and all those things.

They should rename Boeing to Airplane Company.

They should have gone with Washington Menshiviks since the Bolshies and everyone else has been kicking their butts for a couple of decades now.

I’m gonna go against the grain and say that I like this choice. First, announcers have already been referring to the team as ‘Washington’ for years, even before the Redskins name controversy (e.g. “Washington has just taken the ball to the Vikings 5 yard line, and it’s first and goal for Washington...”)
Second, the organization is sticking with George Washington in using this name. Of course it was terrible that George Washington owned slaves, but without General Washington, there would have been no United States of America, we would have simply lost the war, I think.
I think it needs to be remembered that George Washington was born into a system where slavery was already firmly entrenched as a means of production, but at some point he apparently came to a determination that it was wrong, and he did attempt to free his slaves upon his death, in his will.

The best part of this is that the new team will have almost no merchandise sales ... but the owner of the team doesn’t care because all the teams split the sales revenue for all licensed NFL merchandise.
As a former Redskins fan (as of this year) ... the Skins have been unprepared in many aspects over the years ... usually they are thoroughly unprepared to play football.
How about naming the team for its best attributes?
