The NFL team formerly known as the Redskins will go by the Washington Football Team for at least the 2020 season, giving the organisation time to choose a new, full-time name.
Gone is the Indian head logo and the name Native American advocates have called a dictionary-defined racial slur.
Here to stay are the burgundy and gold colours that are synonymous with the franchise's storied history.
Executive vice-president and chief marketing officer Terry Bateman, who was hired on Monday to oversee the name change and rebranding process, called the temporary design "a nice link between the history and the future".
"This is an organic kind of move," Bateman said in a phone interview on Thursday (local time).
"We wanted to think it through and really try to figure out what is the best approach for us, for the community, for the fans, for everybody, and came to the conclusion that what we wanted to do was to go slow with the renaming process and really be very thoughtful, very inclusive, respectful and all those things.

Washington Football Team as a name? You can’t be “Sirius”, Shirley Snyder and cowards.
They should name the team “Washington Fans Ticked-Off”.
Or we can rearrange the name from “Washington Football Team” to “Washington’s Team for Football” - aka “WTF”.
They have given me an idea for a major third political party.
Wait for it—this is truly inspiring and will motivate millions of voters throughout the land.

Interestingly, the inevitable (and more-than-well-deserved) avalanche of ridicule that will haunt this alleged team forever will be much worse than a Native American moniker.
Look for WFT to scrape the bottom of the league for decades. Look for draftees to reject the team.

I was actually thinking about that, selling generic beer in the stadium. I like the name Washington Football Team. Very Maoist.
Why not just go with “The Washington Skins”? Or just “The Skins”.

I was thinking the Washington Engines would be a great name. Oh well.
The stadiun they play in FedEx field is in Maryland, not Washington.
Change the name to the Maryland Karens.

I think some very smart person registered every name he could think of and must have taken their top choices. They are probably negotiating with him to buy the name.
I can feel the change already...young black kids are respecting their teachers, black males are devoting themselves to the women they impregnated, black gangs are disbanding.....I can’t believe this was the solution we overlooked.
I like it. They should keep that name. And we will just call them Redskins. Informally, of course.
