One aspect of the various executive orders being issued all around the country impacts most retail businesses and private social groups, as well as public offices and spaces. Many of these EOs require stores and other public-facing operations wishing to reopen to mandate the wearing of face masks for not only employees but visitors to the establishment. This is quite common where I live, and the rules apply to most operations in a large number of states. But such an order leaves one very big question unanswered. What if the customer or visitor refuses to don a mask? Who is responsible for forcing them into compliance or physically blocking their entrance to the facility? Thats a question plaguing some of the nations major employers this month. NBC News published a brief report on this topic this week. (YouTube)
Countless viral videos show retail and restaurant employees taking heat from customers over mask requirements. While some business owners are training staff on how to deescalate the situation, others think employees shouldnt be the ones required to enforce mask policies.
While this may not sound like a huge deal to some people, at least at first glance, we have already seen numerous examples of just how wrong such a situation can go. One of the worst of them took place in France, where bus drivers were given the responsibility of not allowing any passengers onboard sans face mask. One bus driver attempted to follow this mandate by asking four passengers to put on masks before boarding. He was rewarded for his trouble by being dragged out of his bus and literally beaten to death. (CNN)
A bus driver in France who was beaten up by passengers refusing to wear mandatory face masks died in hospital Friday, French Prime Minister Jean Castex and the victims family have said.
Philippe Monguillot, 59, was left brain dead after the attack in the southwestern city of Bayonne on July 5. His family decided to switch of his life support on Friday, news agency Agence France-Presse reported.
We decided to let him go. The doctors were in favor and we were as well, the victims 18-year-old daughter, Marie Monguillot, told AFP. Four men were detained and charged following the assault.
Weve seen plenty of examples of similar incidents in the United States already, though thankfully none quite so brutal as this. But dont be surprised if the same thing happens in America at some point.
And that brings us to the question of the day. If the local, municipal or state government issues an order saying that masks are mandatory inside of stores, churches, or anyplace else in the private sector, whose responsibility is it to enforce that decree? Sure, the store can put up a sign saying that masks are required to enter and do business. I dont leave the house much these days (obviously) but Ive seen plenty of such signs on the rare occasions when Ive had to venture out. But what happens if someone ignores the sign and walks in anyway?
Certainly, an employee or manager could politely remind them, but the person could just as easily refuse. And then what? You can tell them that they wont be served and wait for them to give up and leave, I suppose. But if they become belligerent, youre probably going to have to call the cops on them. Given how long the average police response time is, you now have some time on your hands with a stock clerk or cashier facing down a potentially violent individual. And Im sure that stories about your place of business calling the cops on somebody looking to pick up a bag of grass seed will do wonders for your customer approval ratings.
Im not saying theres an ideal solution to this problem staring us in the face. There arent enough cops in any precinct in the nation to station one outside every Target, Walmart and gas station to make sure everyone is complying with the local mask orders. But its the consumer who refuses to wear the mask who should be held accountable if anyone must be. Fining or otherwise punishing businesses and churches for being unable to control the behavior of their customers or members can not be allowed as long as a good-faith effort was made to inform the public of the rules.
Thanks for the first hand knowledge. The risks are part and parcel of what a bouncer signs up for, I suppose. I’m just saying a store policy violator is likely to be less difficult to handle than a drunk... or maybe not.
Ha! I didn’t know that.....
to HELL with any store that tries that trick on me!
I know how to deal with it so that they never attempt such krap on another customer again. It won’t be the clerk’s fault, it will be the store owners’ fault and that’s who will pay!
Good luck with that!
I want to get a shirt that says “Get Over Yourselves”
These Democrat governors even made their diktats moot when they marched with protestors and even worse, have since said this doesn't apply to "protestors". (Even Fauxi the Clown said that as well). Any attempt to fine an individual or shut down a business is grounds for a lawsuit for deprivation under the law. Just ask Governor Andrew Nursing Home Killer (NHK) Cuomo. He already lost one.
NWAHAHAHAHAHA. Mr “just like a Nazi” accuses others of shutting down conversation. BWAHAAHa. Mr Pot I’d like to introduce you to Mr Kettle. Comparing somebody to Nazi is not designed to encourage conversation. It exists to show you have no logic to back you, but you really want a win. Well, congrats, you win. You are beneath me and we’re done, yea you.
First of all screw masks! we need to get over this as soon as possible !
If your scared of this virus just social distance!!! Stay home and cower !
if you wanna wear a mask thats fine ! Great for you. Go for it
but dont ever. !!! in the United States of America !!
tell anybody to put anything on their body
or in their body
Give them the CHOICE
We all know that this is conditioning for force vaccinations you government people!!!
OK thanks
I stopped whining. I simply ordered a custom-made mesh mask with holes in them, like a screen door. I'll wear it for shopping, but that's it. Because I know what the next step is - mandatory vaccines and RFID chip.

These Wear a Mask rules are absurd. My local gym requires a mask because my local county requires a mask but not while Actively Exercising. One must wear a mask to enter the gym but after walking 20 feet, one enters the Active Exercising Area and one can remove the mask. What does that accomplish?
My counties rules allow one to remove a mask while eating or drinking except when “interfacing” with the staff.
- enter restaurant wearing mask.
- remove mask once seated.
- when the server arrives to get drink order you’re ‘interfacing’ so the mask goes back on. Server leaves so you can remove mask.
- server brings drinks, you’re interfacing so put the mask back on. Server leaves so you can remove mask.
- waiter arrives to take entree order, more interfacing, mask back on. waiter leaves so mask can come off.
wash, rinse, repeat.
A typical dinner would involve 10 masking/unmasking events. How stupid. Accomplishes nothing.
Mandatory vaccines are pretty unlikely. And RFID chips aren’t gonna happen. Anything they might have wanted with RFID chips they achieve better with the cellphones everybody carries.
You may look stupid without shirt & shoes, but nobody ever looked stupid without one of those idiotic masks.
How long are you prepared to live this way? 6 months, a year, 10 years? Do you realize these mandates are purely a political tool that violates the first amendment and forces you to publicly display your support and compliance for totalitarian rule? When you wear a mask you are speaking out in support of totalitarian rule no matter what your personal views. Would you be ok if you were forced to wear a shirt everywhere in public that supports joe biden for president under the guise that wearing this shirt protects others? That is essentially what these mask mandates are doing.
It is so NOT a violation of the first amendment. Good lord that’s silly. Wearing a mask is following the rules. Just that simple. First of businesses I went to, now the city and county. My your “reasoning” following the road laws is support of totalitarian rule and therefore stop signs are a violations of the 1st. Sorry bud, you’re in CRAZY TOWN.
How about no? No no no no no and no.
My body my choice. Open your eyes!!!!
End of story.
Businesses that make the rules should be respected. If you dont like the rules, go somewhere else. Everyone has a hill to die on. For some its a mole hill.
Yes...they are.
Their business their choice. END OF STORY.
That is a well-thought-out statement on that sign. I love it!
Interesting how the nastiest tyrants are women.
