Footage posted online this week captured the moment a vandal sprayed graffiti outside a Lower Manhattan courthouse, right under the noses of several cops who do nothing but watch.
The video, posted by the Sergeants Benevolent Association on Tuesday and taken in broad daylight, shows the man tagging the base of a lamppost in front of the Surrogates Courthouse at 31 Chambers St., which had already been vandalized amid Occupy City Hall protests last week.
After the man finishes his scrawl, he strolls away, as three cops on the corner and four on the next block stand idle.
Watch this carefully, its not another frustrated COVID-19 excuse by de Blasio, the SBA tweeted. Nor is it an aspiring artist at work. You are watching a graffiti vandal add to the destruction of a NYC building just a short distance from City Hall and yes the NYPD is not allowed to make the arrest.

You are correct here. The citizens who ask LEOs to “just walk away”...do they “just walk away” from their own livelihoods, simple, easy-peasy as that?
The police have been told to stand down. If they arrest the perp he will be released immediately. If he resists arrest the officers life could be in danger or he could end his career in disgrace. I would do the exact same thing knowing that the current xxxxxxx will not be reelected.
Pensions and pay over principle. ☺
I personally walked away from my LEO job. It was VERY hard to do. Unlike many others, I had the personal financial resources to do so at least for the immediate future. Long-term, not so much.
Have you ever had to make such a decision? If so, tell us about it.
Look, from city hall to the people on the street, to the
newspapers to CNN to the courts...
Who backs up those officers if they do something?
N O B O D Y !
That perp would beat them back to the corner after having
paperwork filed on him.
They serve at the directive of their supervisors. They’ve
been told what they can’t do right now. Their supervisors
answer to their supervisors who answer to the mayor.
Blaming these officers is off focus.
That’s all very commendable. But this this story or report is not about me. It’s about an event which occurred in front of the cops in New York City. Pay attention.
That’s been the story for the most part for decades. Throwing cops under the wheels is nothing new for the bosses. They survive politically by throwing you down the stairs. It’s just much worse now. But would people not know this going in? It’s certainly no secret, especially in big cities.
I spent 25 years as a Peace Officer in New York State’s Department of Correctional Services, first as an officer, and then as a Sergeant. Been retired for almost 17 years. Only worked in male prisons. I’m a 72 year old female. One of the lucky ones to live to retire. I always felt safer in the prison, and never would have wanted to be a cop. I was too old anyway, but the cops had it a lot harder, and I always felt bad for the crap they had to put up with. Each department has its own set of politically appointed a-holes who want to tell you how to do your job. And every department at some point tells you, you’re going to have to do even more, with less. What these Democrat-run cities are doing to these police officers is a sin. They’ve put a target on every law enforcement officer’s back across the country. It’s open season on cops. The one thing I won’t do is demean them any more than they already are being demeaned. They need our support, not our disdain. The Democrats are doing a good enough job of that.
Remember what NYC was like back in the ‘70s and ‘80s?
They knew that going in. Especially big cities. It's nothing new. Look, being very pro cop I sympathize with them, being afraid of management and their bosses. But I draw the line when arsonist and violent mobs of anarchist trying take the country over, are publicly violently attacking innocent people right out in the open, day time. Video is everywhere. The video don't lie.
That should never happen regardless of all the reasons or excuses mentioned above. I would surmise, everyone is just going along to get along, and that's the way it is.
I blame the cops here. Lazy, derelict cops who should be fired. It is not their problem if the suspect is not convicted, we dont know what would happen. What we do know and see are cops standing by as monitors while crime is being committed to destroy the city. Shame on them.
To me, it appears that most police agencies, especially in Democrat-run cities are extremely hesitant to use force of any kind, no matter what the situation. And that's not a good thing. You have to send a message to these morons that you're not going to put up with their crap. But it's not being done. Look what's been going on in Congress. Gen. Milliey and Mike Esper have had to appear, and justify why they used the military to back up law enforcement to clear Lafayette Park. In a sane world that would never happen. They should be thanked for getting rid of the scum. Instead, they're being brow-beaten by the liberals who will always second-guess what the police and military do, but not themselves. And of course those bastards have the media in their pocket. The police and military are always going to be demonized, no matter what they do.
Personally, I don't know how these cops are able to go to work everyday, knowing what waits for them. Morale has to be at an all-time low. They only have each other, because as far as the brass, and the politicians are concerned, the officer is expendable. When I worked in Corrections, when it came to the Administration and Albany, we always felt like we were one-step below the convicts. In the NYPD, and the other law enforcement agents in Democrat-run city, I'm sure they feel they are one step below the criminals, and in the eyes of the politicians, they are.
I understand why the cops are holding back. It would be suicide not to. Shoot the wrong suspect, right or wrong, and your face is on the front page while people are attempting to locate and lynch you. This isn’t complex. And hesitation will only cost more cops their lives.
Lots are quitting or taking earlier retirement. My point was if ya take an oath to uphold the law then are told not to, doesn’t work for me... But it’s there choice. I would not put myself or leave myself in that type of situation. That’s just me.
Their choice too...
I wonder what they would do if a graffiti “artist” spray painted MAGA in front of them?
Police departments works under the mayor.
Elect democrat mayors and THEY make the call on what’s enforced and what’s not enforced. Think of police departments as old style military organizations. The private might know we need to ‘take the hill’ but he doesn’t call the charge.
Soon you’ll be able to watch cops stand by as criminals rob banks, rape citizens and beat up old ladies for their purses...
New York seems to be cratering to me.
I’m sure there are other places doing the same thing.
We’re being served up a platter of terrible events day to
day, so it’s hard to know what they overall picture is.
I suspect it’s not as bad as they try to tell us it is.
That’s not to imply I don’t think it’s pretty bad in
some places.
Other places, it’s probably pretty much normal.
This is why, unfortunately, the police and local governments are the enemy. These police let one side get away with all sorts of crimes, including murder, while they arrest the other side for even the smallest infraction.
Prove me wrong.

“Cops know hed be released in an hour so why bother?”
Yep, Unfortunately NYC will have to return to the $hithole status of the 1970-1980’s = Koch/Denkin years before it will turn around again. Even New Yorkers at some point will become so disgusted they will demand law and order.
The police in NYC dont work for the citizenry, and they sure as hell dont care about a silly oath of office.
