Councilwoman Alondra Cano tweeted the department isnt "reformable."
A majority of the Minneapolis City Council agreed Sunday to dismantle the citys police department after the in-custody killing of George Floyd, a council member said.
In an interview with NBC News, councilman Jeremiah Ellison said the council would work to disband the department in its "current iteration."
"The plan has to start somewhere," he said. "We are not going to hit the eject button without a plan so today was the announcement of the formulation of that plan."
Speaking during a community meeting earlier, council President Lisa Bender called the citys relationship with the department toxic and vowed to recreate systems of public safety that actually keep us safe.
Our efforts at incremental reform have failed period, she said. Our commitment is to do whats necessary to keep every single member of our community safe and to tell the truth that Minneapolis police are not doing that.
Ellison said that eight or nine of the council members have agreed to the move.
Mayor Jacob Frey said in a statement that he would work relentlessly with citys police chief, Medaria Arradondo, toward deep, structural reform and to address systemic racism in police culture.
Were ready to dig in and enact more community-led public safety strategies on behalf of our city, he said. But I do not support abolishing the Minneapolis Police Department.
A police department spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The announcement comes nearly two weeks after the killing of Floyd, who died when a police officer, Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee into Floyds neck for nearly nine minutes. The killing was captured on video by a bystander and sparked massive protests across the United States.

Im morbidly curious to see how this experiment turns out.
I think simply that Shariah patrols with connections to certain politicians will take over parts of the city, while others will experience chaos. As this is a blue-print for what behind-the-scenes manipulators have in store for the rest of America, there will be many lessons to be learned.

They’re going to need Master Blaster.
They will live up to their nickname “Lil Mogadishu “
Rules of Engagement: “Shoot, shovel and shut up.”
What could go wrong?
Let’s hope they do it. They won’t actually happen but they will never get out from under it.
The modern storming of the Bastille. Hello Robespierre.
I actually want to see it.
Well, except for any conservatives who live there, and I am sure there are a few.
.... I’m pretty sure that most of the time when a city police force is disbanded ..... Law Enforcement is deferred to the County for enforcement. A lot of Cities and Townships do this to save money in their budget .......
This would be the green light for a shocking bloodbath on the streets of Minneapolis. No resident would ever be safe from theft, looting and murder without the police.
This is a fundamental ignorance of human sin. People are not basically good. They are fundamentally bad. You don’t have to teach a child to be bad. You have to teach a child how to be good.
Gee how safe do you think MN Twins and MN Vikings fans will feel attending home games at their Minneapolis stadiums with no police? Downtown Minneapolis is already a combat zone even with a police department. Watch downtown businesses clpse or flee to tne suburbs
We should compare the murder rate as of today to the future one, say, one year from now.
Yes and the cost is enormous, and the county cant handle anywhere near what a city force can.
You can remove the police from a city but how do you force sane people to keep living there?
There will no doubt be a fundamental transformation. The city will devolve into nothing but lawless trash preying on one another.
Minneapolis citizens, choose from:
1) Pay the dhimmi and you will be protected by the Sharia Patrols
2) Special 80% off deal if you convert
3) Lifetime supply of Bricks, free delivery
The School Board is discontinuing their relationship with the Police Department. Big whoop! All they are doing is putting those children in danger and not giving a damned because it is a part of their Marxist/black-hate-cops mentality to do so.
Hiring private security to protect the schools? Ain’t gonna work unless they are deputized to use deadly force and that is not going to fly either.
I heard that one city, perhaps Minneapolis, is hiring three private security companies to patrol/protect downtown businesses but they will not have weapons or possibly even arrest/custodial holding powers. Not going to fly. Will crash just like the Hindenburg and with the same amount of casualties.
Time for all Minneapolis police officers to resign en masse, dump their guns and badges on the Chief’s desk, tell him to go screw himself (over his PC policies), and tell the City Council Marxist, incompetent Mayor Frey and the city, “Adios amigos, you’re on your own. Enjoy the BBQs coming to your businesses and homes, very soon”.
That would fly like a Concorde airplane because the businessmen and women ARE NOT STUPID. Neither is much of the black working community.
Only time will tell but unless these cities get rid of their Democrat Party incompetent masters, black toadies and Marxists, and plantation mentalities for their urban black communities, NOTHING is going to WORK, CHANGE, or STOP THE VIOLENCE coming down the rails like a runaway train.
Why didn’t they do this when that Australian woman was killed by the muslim cop?
#18. Re “Who will enforce keeping businesses closed?”.
WELL, you can’t enforce anything for a business looted and burnt to the ground, can you?
Lesson to be learned: Either you have the police or right to defend your own businesses and homes, or you meekly surrender to the commies, black racists, anarchists and “stuff” seekers.
