Councilwoman Alondra Cano tweeted the department isn’t "reformable."
A majority of the Minneapolis City Council agreed Sunday to dismantle the city’s police department after the in-custody killing of George Floyd, a council member said.
In an interview with NBC News, councilman Jeremiah Ellison said the council would work to disband the department in its "current iteration."
"The plan has to start somewhere," he said. "We are not going to hit the eject button without a plan so today was the announcement of the formulation of that plan."
Speaking during a community meeting earlier, council President Lisa Bender called the city’s relationship with the department “toxic” and vowed to “recreate systems of public safety that actually keep us safe.”
“Our efforts at incremental reform have failed — period,” she said. “Our commitment is to do what’s necessary to keep every single member of our community safe and to tell the truth that Minneapolis police are not doing that.”
Ellison said that eight or nine of the council members have agreed to the move.
Mayor Jacob Frey said in a statement that he would work “relentlessly” with city’s police chief, Medaria Arradondo, toward “deep, structural reform” and to address “systemic racism in police culture.”
“We’re ready to dig in and enact more community-led public safety strategies on behalf of our city,” he said. “But I do not support abolishing the Minneapolis Police Department.”
A police department spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The announcement comes nearly two weeks after the killing of Floyd, who died when a police officer, Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. The killing was captured on video by a bystander and sparked massive protests across the United States.

Gosh, I wonder how their constituents feel about the city council declaring open season on them?
The people of Minneapolis are getting what they voted for, good and hard.
Talk about tossing the baby out with the bathwater. All they really needed was to vet their cops better. Now they suddenly care after multiple copies murders, including a cop killing a woman outside with a shotgun, just for making a call?
Why? They voted for them.
Wait until they demand the citizens of the city to turn in their guns.
I’ve known a few people from Minneapolis, and I can say without hesitation that only two of them were politically sane.
then let the law abiding armed citizenry take back tbe powers they granted to a government unwilling to do the job.
i say let the citizen militias mow down the rioters and looters with extreme prejudice, and if the mayor or council people are in the midst of the sh1t taking a knee or washing feet or crying about white whatever, they can be a casualty as well.

What about preachers and Rabbis holding services against governor’s orders?

Who will enforce keeping businesses closed??
This police force has no doubt saved many thousands of lives over the years, many, if not most of whom were minorities. But those lives don’t matter, because it doesn’t fit the narrative.
