A church attended by George Washington will take down a memorial to the nation's first president, a move church leaders say is intended to make the place of worship more welcoming.
The Washington Times reported Friday that Christ Church in Alexandria, Va., will remove memorials of Washington and former Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, which stand on either side of the church's altar.
“The plaques in our sanctuary make some in our presence feel unsafe or unwelcome," church leaders said. "Some visitors and guests who worship with us choose not to return because they receive an unintended message from the prominent presence of the plaques.”
Washington began attending the church soon after it opened in 1773, and bought a pew there. He attended for more than 20 years, though he appeared more regularly at Pohick Church, southwest of his estate at Mount Vernon.
Christ Church's decision to remove the statues comes amid a national debate over whether Confederate statues and monuments should be taken down. That debate resurfaced in August after a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., turned violent.
While that debate has focused primarily on Confederate memorials, President Trump suggested shortly after the Charlottesville protests that taking down some memorials would eventually lead to statues of Washington or Thomas Jefferson being removed as well.
"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered, and the process is continuing day-by-day and minute-by-minute.
"History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which The Party is always right."

I live in the area and used to go to this church, but no longer. It has been overrun by libs who hate Republicans and Trump and its apparent in their behavior and sermons.

She firmly supported outdoor mass protests against police but derided the earlier ones peacefully protesting jobs lost to lockdown. Kept abortion facilities fully open without supervision for Covid and did that, too for marijuana stores. Hypocrite.

Of course huge gatherings of hip-to-hip shouting rioters were strongly encouraged to "protest" against police methods. All but a handful had no masks or took them down to shout. Not social distancing except to run away from police after stealing expensive jewelry and setting the building on fire.
Houston’s Robert E. Lee High School was eliminated several years back. Not just renamed, but torn down.
There are three bats who pastor at that church. Totally one-sided, totally political, even more so than the other mainstream Protestant churches.
The time is coming very soon that those street signs and THEIR statues will be coming down and or destroyed.
Any time now. These people are so ignorant. Robert E. Lee was actually almost the commander of the Union forces, but he decided to stick with his state. After the war, he spent a huge amount of his time and whatever fortune remained to him in trying to preach reconciliation and improve the lot of black people, particularly with regards to education, to prepare them to enter into American life as full participants. Many blacks in the slave states had literally received no education at all and it was forbidden to teach them or even teach them religion and baptize them.
Certainly he wasn’t perfect but who is/was? It’s so sad and terrifying to see this riot of ignorance sweeping the land.
When the hell is Washington DC going to be forced to change its name? When is Washington going to be removed from the $1 bill? When are people going to be ordered to have their eyes gouged out so the color of skin won’t be responsible for racism??!

The statue of General Lee was pulled down the other night in Montgomery. They will rename the schools shortly, Robert E Lee, Jefferson Davis and that famous Confederate warrior,Sidney Lanier.

The past must be made flexible to support the political needs of the now. We need to tear down all monuments and historical places; history books need to be rewritten or destroyed. The past must change to support the cause of today. We must raze museums, remove any building ornamentation and cover everything with mud so that the best should not appear different then the worst. The only decoration allowed beyond the brick, razor wire and gunport should be the people’s grafitti.
Taking down monuments and changing names because the person so honored owned slaves will not change U.S. history. The people who owned slaves whose names and statues are now not PC were acting within the norms of their own times. It is ridiculous to judge them by today’s behavioral norms. Only idiots and libtard-fogged fools would suddenly “be outraged” at statues which had sat there for a hundred years. They are a part of our history, which cannot be changed. It happened. Revising history is always dangerous; George Santayana famously said, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
