Costco to require everyone wear 'face coverings' while in their stores
costco.com ^ | 04.30.2020 | Craig Jelinek

Posted on 04/30/2020 6:28:48 AM PDT by rxsid

Dear Costco Member,

To help protect our employees and members, effective May 4, 2020, all Costco members and guests must wear a face covering that covers the mouth and nose, at all times while at Costco. This requirement does not apply to children under the age of 2 or to individuals who are unable to wear a face covering due to a medical condition.

Costco employees are required to wear face coverings, and now we are asking that Costco members do so too. We know some members may find this inconvenient or objectionable, but under the circumstances we believe the added safety is worth any inconvenience. This is not simply a matter of personal choice; a face covering protects not just the wearer, but others too.

In short, we believe this is the right thing to do under the current circumstances. Although some may disagree with this policy or question its effectiveness, we’re choosing to err on the side of safety in our shopping environments. Costco has continued to operate during this crisis as an essential business in all of our communities, and our employees are on the front lines. As part of a community, we believe this simple act of safety and courtesy is one that Costco members and employees can undertake together.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends the use of face coverings in public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. CDC advises that face coverings can help slow the spread of the virus, including among those who are not aware they carry it. However, the use of a face covering should not be seen as a substitute for social distancing. Please continue to observe rules regarding appropriate distancing while at Costco.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Thank you,
Craig Jelinek
President and CEO, Costco Wholesale

With appropriate measures I don't have a problem with that, actually, but I'm not the one insisting that you have a constitutional right to be a jackass.

Wow!

May I submit that to the Brady Bunch?

It could also double as an anti-2AD argument.

Nice work!

“constitutional right to be a jackass.”

Since when did you germophobes care about the constitution?? Want to show us where you being scared means the constitutions are set aside??

“This constitution is only valid if there isn’t a virus.”

You can live with a lot of things.

We could live with singing God Save the King.

We chose not to do it.

Congress to to pass legislation protecting biz, both big and small, from WuFlu civil liability.

That would take care care of this crap.

No we are not reading too much. Costco has a well known left wing corporate agenda. This is about politics.

There’s worse things than this virus and it’s the virus of cowering in fear and willing to give up liberties for the illusion of safety. And once you’ve become comfortable following every order, no matter how nutty, you’ve become a worm. A live worm but still . . a worm.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends...

So which is it? Must, asks, or recommends? Make up your mind while I shop elsewhere.

“Due to a medical condition”

Just say you have claustrophobia and it might cause you to have a panic attack.

I already wear a mask to the store but that is for the employee’s benefit, not mine. If it makes them feel safer, I’m willing to do it.

"This might become a requirement of many of the big retailers."

Yep - at least in the short term, and certainly, until retailers can receive some sort of indemnity or immunity from being held liable, I suspect most will err on the side of caution, or even risk losing their commercial liability coverage even if they wanted to take a less restrictive stance.

I think some bigger, national retailers actually stand to benefit from this. Where in pre-Covid times, a percentage of shoppers would go into Walmart, Costco, Target etc. for just one or two items, nobody is doing that any more. The more onerous the shopping experience (masks, lines, one-way aisles, etc.) the more likely that people are only going out when they intend to fill a shopping cart as full as possible. Consequently, whereas at one point, perhaps 20-30% of people walking into a big retailer may have been buying a shirt, a pack of batteries etc. and making purchases of say $30.00 or less, now virtually 100% of shoppers entering the store are going to spend a minimum of $150-$200 on groceries, cleaning supplies, etc.

I don't have any real data to support this, so just a personal hypotheses at this point.

In a free market, competition would allow another retailer to allow mask free, line free shopping at a perceived higher risk of Corona exposure, however, at least in the near term, I doubt most governors, departments of health and commercial insurers are going to permit any such competition to put down roots.

No problem. I will take my business elsewhere.

Thread could have ended there. America in a nutshell.

Their store. They should decide how to run it.

Your life. You decide where you will shop.

Let this simple principle go to work and open up the economy.

It's a private business. They can do whatever the hell they want. Their customers are free to do whatever the hell THEY want, too.

One of the things I've done in the last two months is to basically eliminate any discretionary purchases from my life. I'll tolerate inconvenience to buy what I need (i.e., wearing a mask or traveling 70+ miles to a neighboring state to do my grocery shopping), but I haven't bought anything other than groceries and gas since this fiasco started.

The irony here is that my business has been doing very well for the second consecutive month now -- so this isn't being driven by financial considerations at all.

This is getting out of control. I thought by now things would be getting better, saner.

Not while Trump is still in office.

I love you flubros. Your unreasonability, irresponsibility and irrationality are manifest. Keep being jackasses - which is a slander on donkeys actually.

Thank you. Those insults are a badge of honor coming from a tantruming Wu Flu addict. I proudly wear them.
