Major Earthquake - Utah County

Very significant earthquake just now, 5.5 at least

What freaked me out was the side-side motion. In my head I’m expecting up/down like driving on a dirt road, nope. Just had another aftershock just as I’m typing this.

I was in a data center sitting on a commercial office chair with my feet on the legs - when a small shaker (3.5) hit. It was sureal. The desk / keyboard moved away and then moved back. That is all I felt. I thought someone was punking me.

Here in Panama, I’ve rattled through 5.2 and 5.1 quakes in the past couple of weeks. These were related to an even stronger one offshore. I would be concerned for any underground mining in Utah. I know there is a major copper mine close to where my nephew lives in Copperton. Yes, they named the town after copper.

Granted "Godzilla" was a bit more in-your-face than necessary, but s/he has a point. SLC is some 275-300 mi. SOUTH, and also maybe 50-75 WEST of Yellowstone. A reasonable person wouldn't say it's west of Yellowstone to establish a point of reference, although technically correct. To your logic, technically Phoenix is west of Yellowstone. I don't think many would say it though, if trying to give someone any sort of idea as to its predominate relative direction.
