A number of cities like Tucson out west get their water from deep under their feet. Over the decades as they have reduced that volume more and more the earth in between settles some. One wonders if that isnt what is happening.

The amount of water humans take out of the earth is really insignificant. Generally, its not pulling it from underwater caverns that could collapse. It is water thats permeated the rock.
