Findings
Of 710 patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, 52 critically ill adult patients were included. The mean age of the 52 patients was 59·7 (SD 13·3) years, 35 (67%) were men, 21 (40%) had chronic illness, 51 (98%) had fever. 32 (61·5%) patients had died at 28 days, and the median duration from admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) to death was 7 (IQR 311) days for non-survivors. Compared with survivors, non-survivors were older (64·6 years [11·2] vs 51·9 years [12·9]), more likely to develop ARDS (26 [81%] patients vs 9 [45%] patients), and more likely to receive mechanical ventilation (30 [94%] patients vs 7 [35%] patients), either invasively or non-invasively. Most patients had organ function damage, including 35 (67%) with ARDS, 15 (29%) with acute kidney injury, 12 (23%) with cardiac injury, 15 (29%) with liver dysfunction, and one (2%) with pneumothorax. 37 (71%) patients required mechanical ventilation. Hospital-acquired infection occurred in seven (13·5%) patients.

The common cold, Rush? Not at all.
Outcomes
The primary outcome was 28-day mortality after ICU admission. Secondary outcomes were incidence of SARS-CoV-2-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS and shock were defined according to the guidance of WHO for novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).6 Acute kidney injury was identified on the basis of serum creatinine.11 Cardiac injury was diagnosed if the serum concentration of hypersensitive cardiac troponin I (hsTNI) was above the upper limit of the reference range (>28 pg/mL), measured in the laboratory of Jin Yin-tan Hospital.
28 day mortality for ICU patients.
Smells like a bioweapon.
...there have been a *lot* of theories.
Still I wonder why President Trump is so optimistic when it’s spreading in Iran and Italy; and, too, why he’s so optimistic while the CDC is so unfailingly clueless.
Im sure curious about the classified briefing that the Senate receives tomorrow!
No doubt a Rat will selectively leak info.
Ping
Doing a little searching for long term outcomes for those afflicted with ARDS or SARS is not a pretty picture. Some of those ICU cases that survive will never be the same, living with chronic fatigue syndrome, various diminished organ functions, depression, etc. You do not want to be one of the “serious” cases.
In sum, 20 of the original 710 ultimately died. 2.8% mortality. indeed is higher than the common cold.
Im not a doctor, but what about steroid use for ARDS? I recently had a bad case of bronchitis due to some unknown virus, and what finally helped me was a heavy steroid dose.
Because the death rate outside of China is incredibly low. It’s a flu.
In Wuhan, 20% of patients were admitted to the ICU. It seems Korea and Italy are seeing similar numbers.
Iran is publishing mortality rates of 20%, so we know they are full of crap.
It is good to see more true research getting out of China. Im deadly against the CCP, but I am very impressed by the doctors in Wuhan.
South Korea 893 infected, 9 deaths, 6 critical, 22 recovered
Do you see odds like that for flu? No.
Thats almost 10% mortality in a first world nation. Or one squad in a battalion on a five day exercise.
Primary outcome was death.
Secondary outcome was barely surviving pneumonia on a breathing machine.
But the original number of patients was 710. Of those, the 52 in ICU were selected.
The above outcome narrative was about the 52 in ICU.
Thanks and a bump.
Whew. This is a bleak paper.
“why hes so optimistic while the CDC is so unfailingly clueless”
I wish I knew.
Maybe he doesn’t want to foretell outcome scenarios to avoid panic?
Maybe everyone around him is telling him it’s not a big issue?
A classified briefing for the entire Senate is a more telling sign than his happy talk on twitter.
Why does this paper call it “SARS-CoV-2” instead of Covid-19?
WHO calls it the SARS variant.
Of all the people who contract the COVID-19 virus, how many proceed on to experience SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia?
And thank you for reading the paper - I felt it was bleak too.
So far it seems like 80% only experience mild symptoms, like a flu.
The rest end up in ICU.
You’re completely uninformed.
