Richmond: The Mother of All Buffalo Jumps
The more I ponder the mass demonstration being promoted by the Virginia Citizens Defense League for the annual Lobby Day at the Richmond Capitol, the more it looks like a disaster in the making. I wish it were otherwise, but I see many times more downside risk than possible upside benefit.
Even if Virginia Senate Bill 16 is passed, banning nearly all semi-automatic firearms, the new law will be challenged in court, and given the potential dire outcomes, the case will rapidly ascend to the SCOTUS. This process will take years, and Governor Ralph Northam and the Democrat majority in the legislature may be voted out in the meantime, and the law overturned. So why, before all that happens, go charging into Richmond in just a few weeks? Will rabidly anti-gun urban Democrats be convinced to change their minds because of a mass rally by their despised deplorable enemies? Not a chance. Instead, it will only harden their resolve. Now lets look at the downside risks, which I have divided into overlapping scenarios, from best to worst case.
Scenario 1: Best Case
Even if nobody is seriously injured on January 20, some percentage of the Second Amendment crowd (or anti-gun trolls posing as such in order to discredit them) will show up wearing camouflage while waving long guns, Confederate battle flags, and, as in Charlottesville, even some Nazi swastika flags. No matter what the VCDL intends, this fringe element will become the national media image of the entire event. And trust me, these morons and bad actors will show up in Richmond. Believe it or not, there is actually a lunatic element that considers Charlottesville to have been a victory for the far right, because now everybody knows were here to fight!

Ping.
Good, common sense.
I think Matt Bracken is right.
The right is going into a leftist stronghold, possibly with antifa infiltration, swastika flag/sign carriers (false flagging), police standowns, funneling the 2nd amendment folks into an antifa gauntlet.
The left knows this is coming and they will be prepared.
This could turn into Charlottesville v 2.0
ROFL

The left lives by the creed of the ends justify the means.
Also, never let a good crisis go to waste...
Unhhh...much sense in what you say, Kemosabe...
Still going. Don’t care no more.
Or Lexington and Concord v 2.0...

Sounds like you are unfamiliar with Matt Bracken? And doesn't sound like you're familiar with how demoKKKrats take care of business in Virginia:
Im going, and Im going there armed. If an ANTIFS thug attacks me, hes going down.
Period.
Matt Bracken is one smart guy, author and former special forces.
He knows the score. He posts here at FR under the name Travis McGee.
ANTIFA
When Bracken talks, I listen.
You’re a wise man.
I listen, too.
There is a way to ensure antifa does not mess things up. 2A types will recognize them, they cannot blend in with us, visually or conversationally. when you identify them, notify the local police that a counter-demonstrator has entered our group and let the officer deal with it.
If that doesn’t work hem them in and push them to the back of the crowd.
I think the thing to do is start a petition to do a serious secession movement. The sanctuary counties petition Richmond and the federal government to be allowed to form their own state. Say, “Ok you want that type of legislation in your state. Fine! That’s not the type of state we wish to live in. Let us form our own state where the Constitution & Bill of Rights are sacrosanct. You live without it (You in your state!) we’ll keep firearms as they are in our version of Virginia. We will live it our way in New Virginia (Call it Shenandoah! -— or whatever name, maybe join with Tennessee or WV!) Let see which will be more livable!”. Propose to peacefully split like the Czech Republic & Slovakia did from old Czechoslovakia. All very reasonable, all peaceful and all law abiding & Constitutional. It would generate far better national & international PR & sympathy then going to downtown Richmond wearing cammo & armed. Make them look like the unreasonable party! The first side provoked into violence particularly firearm violence loses all!
Worse thing to do right now is be confrontational! They want a confrontation they can manipulate into a tragedy!
Matt, in light of your CV, the essay above is very sound advice and should be taken seriously..
The offramp excerpt from your new book springs to mind re fubar rapidity.
Sadly tho, it may simply be too late to avoid some degree of same.
Local pressure seems the wisest course, all the way thru the appeals process.
Richmond on the 20th has all the tactical appeal of those apocryphal Polish cavalry charges against Nazi armor.
Playing out very close to the book. Matt Bracken has some cool insight!
