Since becoming Alabama's first Democratic U.S. senator in 25 years, Doug Jones has been carefully balancing his progressive views with the wishes of his state's conservative voters.
Now, facing re-election in 2020, he could break with his party and vote to acquit the president, reports NBC News.
Jones won a special election two years ago by just two percentage points against Roy Moore, who was accused of sexual misconduct involving minors. This fall, along with Moore, he will face popular Republicans Jeff Sessions and former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville.
Sessions, the former Alabama senator and attorney general under Trump, and Tuberville both lead Jones in polls.

He should back Trump and then retire making way for a decent human being. Even Jeff Sessions would be better than Jones
Jones is almost guaranteed to get beaten in the next election so it’s a hail Mary pass to try and stay in office. He knows that if he votes against Trump it’s a 99% chance he’ll lose the election, if he votes for Trump it’s a 98% chance.
Doesn’t he have his income secured forever now? Or has he not had enough time to make all the defcon connections for when he’s out of office.
Since he’s not going to get re-elected, he’s likely to vote with the democrats against Trump. Nothing to lose, nothing to gain by favoring Trump.
Hopefully the voters in Alabama will not be so stupid as to reelect this turd.
We won’t. Jones election was caused by a major miscalculation by McConnell. I’m gonna vote for Byrne but Sessions will probably take it. Moore’s only contribution will be siphoning enough votes to cause a runoff between Sessions and Tuberville.
“Could” <> “will”
I have to admit that were I able to vote in such an election, I would have to vote for Sessions.
I wouldn’t be happy about it, but I would do it.
He actually does have a small chance to get re-elected, because there could be another Roy Moore type situation. For example, if he runs against Sessions, it should be a slam dunk for Sessions. But Sessions could be taken down in a scandal at just the wrong moment, bringing him neck-and-neck with Doug Jones in the race. Under that type of scenario, Doug Jones would have a better chance for re-election if he sided with Trump on the impeachment issue.
I read last night that there are 5 possible Dem votes to acquit, and that may be why Nancy doesn’t want to go forward. Her plan is to keep trying to add new charges.
No, a senator has to serve five years to be eligible for a pension. He's been in office since January 2018.
Obviously there are a bunch of perks of being a senator or ex-senator other than the pension. Who knows what he could have set up by now, if he's smart he's got one of his kids on the board of a Ukrainian energy company. I hear that pays well and you don't actually have to show up.
Bottom line is that he'll end up a LOT richer in the long run if he stays a senator.
Hopefully people will not fall for a fake scandal again. Surprise, surprise...all of Moore's accusers faded into the woodwork after the election. Then we had the Kavanaugh circus. It's the only playbook the Dems have, and with Kavanaugh, the firm pushback by Trump really gutted them. If Kavanaugh had been a Bush nominee, his nomination would have been withdrawn. I fully expect the Dems to have some kind scandal ready no matter who the Republican nominee is, but hopefully the voters will see it for what it is next time.
he’s a goner no matter what he does. schumer will force him to take one for the team.

There will always be a Roy Moore situation. Thats all the progressives have. The only question is, will the Republicans fall for it again or will they pull a Kavanaugh and fight back? The Republican establishment completely caved with Roy Moore. False accusations and fake impeachment are the new normal and its pathetic.

Since a senator's term is for 6 years, even one term senators receive pension benefits...just sayin'
Its a cynical ploy to keep his seat. If he wins, he will become the most liberal member of the Senate. Hell suddenly be Trumps biggest detractor.
Yup. CONgress! Turning dumbasses into millionaires for decades.
IN NJ Dem Jeff Von Drew's switch to Republican DUE TO IMPEACHMENT
lurks the promise that he will bring over maybe two more Dems with him.
If Dems cant win NJ, they are cooked.
===================================
House Dems that won (w/ voter fraud) in Trump districts are facing voter discontent.......a good harbinger of things to come.
You could be right, however, with Trump running and having huge influence to help elect somebody else that could bring a bigger republican majority, then, Doug Jones’s chances are virtually none.
