Nixon resigned because his voting base deserted him, which undermined his support from his party. As yet, not only is Trump's base not deserting him, his approval rate is the most unwavering of any president since they began tracking the statistic.
Nixon loathed the press, and was loathed by them. He intensely disliked having to deal with them and never learned the knack of getting the best of them.
Trump is loathed by the press but he relishes the intellectual jousts with them because he routinely makes them look foolish and amateurish. He makes them dance before him like puppets on strings.
And why stop impeachment? If they impeach but can't convict (and there is exactly ZERO chance of conviction), it will cost the demoncrats dearly at the ballot box.
I think the best course is to heed the advice of the Napoleon Bonaparte when he said "...[W]hen the enemy is making a false movement we must take good care not to interrupt him."

That's exactly what happened, but do not minimize the fact that they "caved" after eighteen months of orchestrated propaganda that was expertly deployed by CIA (Woodward), FBI (Felt), WaPo (Bradlee, who had intel connections), and the electronic media, then in its infancy.
The tapes, and especially the erasure, would not have worked any sooner than they were deployed.
Nixon was trapped in a hall of mirrors, enemies appearing and disappearing, not knowing who to trust, lashing out as anyone would do.
It was these concealed lines of attack that prepped the battlefield for the big reveal of the tapes, JUST AT THE MOMENT when the donors and media could wallop the GOP Senators with maximum pressure.
You have no doubt seen some of the insane impeachment drumbeat that goes on 24/7 on CNN.
Now, imagine that you only have access to 3 television channels and it’s on ALL of them.
And that they interrupt regular programming every day to run gavel-to-gavel coverage of the dog-and-pony Congressional hearings.
And that everyone read a daily newspaper and 90% of the editorials called for Nixon’s ouster.
THAT is what it’s was like. No talk radio, no internet, no Fox News (such as it is) or any other alternatives.
They’ve lost their monopoly which allowed them to execute this plan against Nixon. Indeed Trump counters a lot of their moves pretty effectively with a Twitter account.
That’s very good.
It’s a real, true red pill to swallow that WATERGATE DOESN’T MAKE SENSE.
Since most of us alive at that time, and generations too young to remember how it was, the CIA and FBI lies were the only things that made it make sense, we believed them. Many still cling to them.
But I don’t, not any more. You can’t see the Ukraine from the grassy knoll, but if you let your imagination wander...

While I agree emotionally with you, I think Pelosi’s and Schiff’s depravations will stand. Nixon v US a 9-0 decision gives each House complete control over its impeachment proceedings. In this case a federal judge from Miis. Nixon was impeached bt the House but tried not before the Senate, but before the Judiciary Committee, which fou d him guilty by less than 2/3 rds of the members a d reported its findings to the whole Senate wich voted by 2/3 rds to convict.
We will not go peacefully into the night!-)

It was Mark Felt aka “Deep Throat”, a disgruntled FBI worker who was passed over as head of FBI when Hoover died. The case was going to be dropped after Nixon was re-elected, but Felt resurrected the case.
But Woodward was CIA (and there may have been other CIA involved).
It is the collaboration between the FBI (Felt, Comey, Mueller) and the CIA (Woodward, Brennan, Mifsud) to remove a President who threatens their power base that I find so striking.
EVEN IF Nixon committed crimes (and I no longer believe that to be true), his REAL crime was crushing George McGovern in the largest American landslide up to that point.
His gigantic landslide gave him power to make changes, and THAT is the reason he had to be stopped.
I remember that but where did the two WaPo reporters come in? I wish I could remember where I read it or maybe I saw it on TV. Senior moment.
After looking a the tens of thousands of Trump supporters gathering for the Trump Rally in Dallas, Texas, this evening....I would not want be a Democrat if their impeachment gig works and Trump is truly impeached by both the House and Senate!!!
The one thing these rallies accomplish is that they energize Trump and give him the strength to keep going on.
Bob Woodward was a CIA operative working at the Washington Post. He was Mark Felt’s conduit to put anti-Nixon information into the public eye.
Who was feeding who information is unknown.
The left would have sought to impeach Nixon over his role in the McCarthy hearings, had he won in 1960.
