NYC restaurant industry jobs evaporate after $15/hr wage sets in

Last December, the final phase of increasing the minimum wage in New York City to $15 per hour went into effect. (Well, at least the last stage for now.) It was considered a huge victory for the Fight for 15 crowd and, presumably, a big win for workers, particularly in the foodservice industry. So how has that been working out since then? As the New York Post reported this weekend, the law of unintended consequences has come roaring into play. They feature the story of one taco and tequila joint on the upper west side that’s been doing a thriving business for a quarter of a century. But now it’s all coming to an end, and they’re far from the only restaurant feeling these effects.

Per NYS...

Starting 2021, the annual increases will be published by the Commissioner of Labor on or before October 1. They will be based on percentage increases determined by the Director of the Division of Budget, based on economic indices, including the Consumer Price Index.

It is working exactly as designed and intended, put as many lower middle class out of work as possible, get them hooked on EBT and Subsidies, then they HAVE TO VOTE for their bread and butter being doled out by the Slave Masters in the Demonrat Party.

This is what happens when socialists use workers to score points. They wreck the lives of workers and owners than move on. The real culprits here are the skunks in the Working Families party. THEY still have jobs by the workers they used don’t - thus is the way social experimentation ends.

Dems don’t care about the living wage. It is only an issue as union wages are a multiple of minimum wage. Political donations come from union dues, which are based on union wages.

I keep waiting for them to repeal the law of conservation of energy, make gravity an option, and legislate pi to be equal to 3.0

I remember one of the southern states, maybe Geogia, did pass a bill several years (possibly 10) stating that pi was to be calculated at 3.14 or something similar

Yep. Even the NY Times ran an editorial about it in 1987.

'........the law of unintended consequences has come roaring into play.'

Fixed it. They know exactly what they're doing. Put more people on the dole and raise the taxes of those precious $15 an hour workers to pay for it. Nobody wins, everybody loses. Status quo. Like Mencken said, "Every election is a sort of advance auction sale of stolen goods."

Well, the important thing is the ruling elite got to virtue signal each other. Who gives a f’ about the actual worker thrown out of work by the $15 minimum.

AOC’s old bar closed because of minimum wage increases. Maybe all of the unemployed workers should become congressmen.

It is nor unintended consequences. The Democrats get to claim credit for increasing the minimum wage while, at the same time, forcing more people on welfare dependency programs. The Rats get more people to vote for them and supporting larger government programs.

Just pass a law that forbids laying off people. Also pass a law that forbids closing establishments that sell food. Of course this is NYC, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I’ve seen once busy restaurants and bars from before the minimum wage was voted on and raised in AZ to now practically empty with the servers and bartenders looking for other work due to lack of tips and business because now the food and drink prices have sometimes doubled preventing many from coming in at all.

Many tried to warn the people but all they could see is a pay raise; not the layoffs, not the lack of business, and not the restaurant closings so the few jobs in the field available just got more competitive. Once thriving bartenders and waitstaff are putting personal ads on Facebook looking for weed pulling day jobs just to make a few dollars.

The irony is no one was helped with the wage increase because it was across the board so all prices on everything went up. What little, if any, raise per week in pay was gobbled up by the higher prices but those, like seniors living on low fixed incomes, are having to do with even less than before.

This isn’t something that can be rolled back either. We are now stuck with this very bad law and unintended consequences.

Time was when I think you could almost manage on minimum wage & it was a lot less than it is now anywhere, but inflation has just outrun it. From what I’m seeing & hearing, now there is probably almost nowhere you can manage even making more than minimum with even the lowest standard of living. Rent will take about half or more, & a car & groceries will get what’s left....if there is anything left. If you can manage it, owning a home rather than renting, may be cheaper.

That’s essentially what the Mickey D’s kiosk system is now, except somebody brings it to your table.
