City students who skip school for the national Climate Strike walkout next week wont be punished, Education Department officials said Thursday.
Im thankful that DOE made the decision to support our students powerful path towards change by excusing absences for the Climate Strike," said City Council Member Rafael Espinal, Jr. who urged the move at a rally with kids at city hall.
The climate crisis is not slowing down and our students arent either by leading the fight against it and we should be doing everything we can to encourage their leadership, Espinal, (D-Brooklyn) said.
Students across the city will walk out of classrooms on Sept. 20 three days before the climate summit at the UN to demand more immediate action on global warming. Teen activist and Swedish sensation Greta Thunberg, who recently docked her zero-emissions sailboat in New York, will speak at the event which will snake its way through lower Manhattan to Battery Park.

They are insane.
Well it’s not like they are missing an education, because they aren’t getting one when they are there.
The Education Department officials who decided that should be tried, convicted, and sentenced to be publicly horse-whipped for mis-, mal-, non-, and anti-feasance!
The objective is to indoctrinate the next generation of commie activists.
And, of course, the taxpayers have no say in this decision. I can’t wait for the next Maunder Minimum and watch the Left turn on a dime change, again, to global cooling is the greatest threat to the planet.
After all, they're back to the "overpopulation" crap, from the early '70s.
+1
Barely sentient hominids.
There! Fixed it.
Why not? City schools achievement levels are so low that missing another day probably won’t help kids already getting a crap education. And DeBlasio wants to make the schools even worse. Every child left behind.
And three quarters of them will do exactly what I’d do: skip school, skip the global whining protest, and go raise hell somewhere. Not only won’t anyone be held accountable, Mayor Wilhelm will probably endorse it.
And, of course, the taxpayers have no say in this decision.
Actually, they do. No kids in class = no federal dollars for their attendance that day. NYC will likely lose a pile of cash for this stunt.
I’d knock them all down for the semester grade if they walk out.
Leadership? It's the exact opposite of leadership. It's mindless following so they can be a part of the in-crowd.
And the schools should all loose the taxes confiscated for that day.
Will they check attendance at the strike? Will there be student “leaders” or “captains” who will verify that they were at the strike and not just playing hookey?
The left is starting to use children as political pawns. The shit they are doing is getting scary.
Here is the new term; Climate CRISIS. Watch for it.
You might be right, but I wouldn’t be surprised if NYC categorizes this as an authorized field trip, plays games with attendance records, or otherwise protects their gravy train.
