Cuomo’s bizarre plan to force New Yorkers to get new license plates
NY Post ^ | 8/23/19

Leave it to Gov. Cuomo to come up with a wacky Rube Goldberg-like scheme, even for something as small-time as license plates.

Cuomo this week announced that the state is changing the style of its plates, and everyone with vehicles more than 10 years old will have to get one.

Oh, it’ll cost you an extra $25 — plus $20 more to keep the same plate numbers.

**SNIP**

New Yorkers get to vote on one of five possible designs, four that show the Statue of Liberty and one featuring the new Tappan Zee — er, Gov. Mario M. Cuomo — Bridge.

Cash grab. With so many taxpayers fleeing the state, Albany has to get its money from somewhere.

Do those thoae states require people with cars of a certain to buy them?

BTW, Cuomo’s original plan was to make every car owner buy the new plates, but there was too much blowback from that.

This is a cash grab.

Ontario just redesigned its plates but they will only be used for new registrations from what I understand and they won’t be available until current stocks of the old design are used up which will probably be Feb of next year.

They did that here in WA - every seven years you had to get a new plate regardless. Their reasoning is that in seven years your plate is all beat up and dirty so you have to replace it. Mine was pristine, show it to the licensing place and they said nope, you still have to get a new plate. I understand now they’re no longer requiring it.

You have to replace them after so many years (unsure how many) in Florida. We have so many different plate designs to choose from, too. Weird. At least we only have to buy one plate. Front plates look strange....

Back in the day in Illinois I had to change plates every January in -20 degree weather. Nuts!

Ohio used to require you to get new plates when they changed designs a second time. If you had design A, you could skip B but had to buy C when it came out. Now the plate just has to be readable. I switched last year because I thought it was rusting enough that it might atttract police “attention”.
