In Illinois it keeps our ex-Governors busy with something to do while they serve their terms.
Yeah, but they don’t do it to get a picture of the bridge named for the governor’s father on the plates.
Just look at the bogus choices NYers get to vote on: four that feature the Statue of Liberty with gold trimmings, a white background, and the goofy “Excelsior” state motto — and one of the bridge, with a grey background and no goofy “Excelsior” state motto.
Talk about a rigging to split the vote!

I assume you mean Ontario in Canada. Have always kept same plates in California in my lifetime and Im willing to bet going back to at least WWII.
The quality of the newer ugly orange plates is terrible. The paint starts to peel after 6 or 7 years. For the older white ones, peeling doesn't seem to be a problem and those are about 10 to 18 years old.
Unfortunately it's the older better quality white plates that Pius Jr. wants to replace.
I believe the quality of the newer orange plates was made purposely worse, because about 10 years ago when they tried to make everybody replace the white ones, people said no because the white ones weren't peeling.
So now the newer orange ones peel.
One would think with all the tech improvements a good weather resistant license plate could be developed and issued with attachment devices that don’t rust. The same peeling problem has cropped up here in Ontario and apparently the new upcoming plates will solve this although that remains to be seen. They are apparently going to be flat with no raised characters if that is supposed to prevent peeling. Maybe one day in the future they will do away with the plates and have every car with an electronic sensor that can be scanned by the police or other authorities for registration but who knows how that would work or not.
correct.....here is the history of your California jurisdiction.....each state of course has its own unique history
History of the California License Plate
California began issuing permanent license plates in 1914. They were made from porcelain and painted brick red with white lettering.
Two years later, the state began to use a variety of uniquely shaped tags to show proof of vehicle registration. They were attached to a white metal license plate with blue lettering.
From 1920 to 1941, the state annually issued a new plate that displayed the registration year. That changed in 1942 with the U.S. involvement in World War II. Metal became a precious commodity because it was needed for the war effort. So, the DMV began to issue long steel strips that displayed the registration year to affix to the license plate.
The California license plate continued to evolve. Personalized license plates made their debut in 1972 and vehicles manufactured after 1922 that were 25 years or older qualified for a newly produced historical vehicle plate.
In 1987, a reflective coating was incorporated onto all new plates.
The DMV celebrated Californias 150-year birthday with plates that were inscribed with Sesquicentennial -150 years and were offered from 1998 through 2000. DMVs website address was placed on the plate in 2011.
Here in Alabama we have to change tags every few years, but every year we reregister and change the sticker.
The thing is changing out tags every few years you get a new number each time, well after a while they start reusing the numbers and it gets interesting when it comes to Ted light cameras.
There are people who have gotten tickets in the mail because their old tag number was reissued, but the database sent to the third party camera operator was never updated or some crazy crap like that.

I also noticed they seem to have dropped that scheme — a relief to me since I have a whole fleet of vintage motorbikes not to mention the cars.
“Similar here in Montana but we have to replace due to lower reflectivity of the older plate.”
Same ostensible crap reason they used in WA.
What are “tags”?
I wonder how much Avery Dennison Corp. of Glendale, Calif. contributed to Cuomo’s campaign? (Supplying contractor of NY plate material)
well maybe they can start charging income tax on the retired teachers...

+++++++++++
retired teachers dont pay income tax in NYS??
Certainly in my tri-state area(Indiana,Kentucky,Ohio) and I suppose it was sometime in the 1980s the change to stickers happened.
You got me curious ... per Wikipedia: in California, plates were changed out every year from 1920 to 1941. To validate the '41 plate for '42, a metal strip was used to save metal for wartime uses. After that it was small metal tabs until the adhesive stickers replaced them in 1957 - except for 1944, which was a window sticker.
1957 huh? Like I wrote, in my lifetime you kept the same plates.
